The binary collision of nanoscale droplets is studied with molecular dynamics simulation for droplets consisting of up to 2 × 10 molecules interacting via a truncated and shifted form of the Lennard-Jones potential. Considering head-on collisions of droplets with a temperature near the triple point that occur in a saturated vapor of the same fluid, this work explores a range of collision topologies. Four droplet sizes, with a radius ranging from 30 to 120 molecule diameters, are simulated with a varying initial relative collision velocity, covering 36 cases in total.

Hidden domain boundary dynamics toward crystalline perfection.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305.

A central paradigm of nonequilibrium physics concerns the dynamics of heterogeneity and disorder, impacting processes ranging from the behavior of glasses to the emergent functionality of active matter. Understanding these complex mesoscopic systems requires probing the microscopic trajectories associated with irreversible processes, the role of fluctuations and entropy growth, and the timescales on which nonequilibrium responses are ultimately maintained. Approaches that illuminate these processes in model systems may enable a more general understanding of other heterogeneous nonequilibrium phenomena, and potentially define ultimate speed and energy cost limits for information processing technologies.

In the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), age of information (AoI) has become a vital performance metric for evaluating the freshness of information in communication systems. Although many studies aim to minimize the average AoI of the system through optimized resource scheduling schemes, they often fail to adequately consider the queue characteristics. Moreover, vehicle mobility leads to rapid changes in network topology and channel conditions, making it difficult to accurately reflect the unique characteristics of vehicles with the calculated AoI under ideal channel conditions.

Multiscale Concurrent Topology Optimization and Mechanical Property Analysis of Sandwich Structures.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Institute of Applied Mechanics, College of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China.

Based on the basic theoretical framework of the Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization method (BESO) and the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization method (SIMP), this paper presents a multiscale topology optimization method for concurrently optimizing the sandwich structure at the macro level and the core layer at the micro level. The types of optimizations are divided into macro and micro concurrent topology optimization (MM), macro and micro gradient concurrent topology optimization (MMG), and macro and micro layered gradient concurrent topology optimization (MMLG). In order to compare the multiscale optimization method with the traditional macroscopic optimization method, the sandwich simply supported beam is illustrated as a numerical example to demonstrate the functionalities and superiorities of the proposed method.

Objectives: Due to poor treatment adherence and lifestyle-based interventions, chronic hypertension is a dominant risk factor predisposing individuals to heart failure and malignant arrhythmias. We investigated the impact of the postnatal acclimation of hairless SHR to ambient temperature that is, for them, below thermoneutrality, on the electrical coupling protein connexin-43 (Cx43) and pro-fibrotic markers in both heart ventricles of male and female hairless SHR rats compared to the wild SHR.

Methods: Some 6-month-acclimated male and female hairless SHR as well as age- and sex-matched wild SHR were included and compared with the non-hypertensive Wistar strain.
