, the commonly used name for a rare and little-known Sino-Himalayan species, was found to be a synonym of , a forgotten and previously misinterpreted species known in Indonesia. A comparative study of herbarium materials and our collections made it possible to 'extend' the distribution of s. str. southward to Indonesia. The description of oil bodies from the species is provided for the first time. The position of the species in the phylogenetic system demonstrates its clear differences from the morphologically similar and its phylogenetic relationship with the Japanese-Korean .

This study reports the isolation and characterization of highly resistant bacterial and microalgal strains from an Egyptian wastewater treatment station to cyanide-containing compounds. The bacterial strain was identified as Bacillus licheniformis by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The isolate removed up to 1 g L potassium cyanide, 3 g L benzonitrile, and 1 g L sodium salicylate when incubated as 10% v/v in MSM at 30 ℃.

Characterising functional diversity is a vital element to understanding a species' immune function, yet many immunogenetic studies in non-model organisms tend to focus on only one or two gene families such as the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) or toll-like receptors (TLR). Another interesting component of the eukaryotic innate immune system is the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The two major groups of mammalian AMPs are cathelicidins and defensins, with the former having undergone species-specific expansions in marsupials.

Streptofilum capillatum was recently described and immediately caught scientific attention, because it forms a phylogenetically deep branch in the streptophytes and is characterised by a unique cell coverage composed of piliform scales. Its phylogenetic position and taxonomic rank are still controversial discussed. In the present study, we isolated further strains of Streptofilum from biocrusts in sand dunes and Arctic tundra soil.

The unintended microbiological production of hydrogen sulphide (HS) poses a significant challenge in engineered systems, including sewage treatment plants, landfills and aquaculture systems. Although sulphur-rich amino acids and other substrates conducive to non-sulphate-based HS production are frequently present, the capacity and potential of various microorganisms to perform sulphate-free HS production remain unclear. In this study, we identify the identity, activity and genomic characteristics of bacteria that degrade cysteine to produce HS in anaerobic enrichment bioreactors seeded with material from aquaculture systems.

Background: A thorough analysis of genome evolution is fundamental for biodiversity understanding. The iconic monotremes (platypus and echidna) feature extraordinary biology. However, they also exhibit rearrangements in several chromosomes, especially in the sex chromosome chain.
