Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element that is nutritionally essential for humans and animals, but becomes toxic at high concentrations. This laboratory study explored the role of microbes in Se removal from contaminated wastewater via biological transformation and volatilization processes. Microbes could immobilize water-soluble selenate (SeO) and selenite (SeO) to water-insoluble elemental Se (Se) and transform Se into volatile Se compounds found in the atmosphere. Results of this laboratory study showed that Bacillus cereus, a bacterial strain isolated from wheat straw and biosolid-WTR-sand substrates showed a significant biotransformation ability of reducing selenate and selenite to elemental Se and forming volatile Se organic compounds in wastewater. Overall, microbial Se chemical reduction, methylation, and volatilization are important processes in bioremediation of Se-contaminated wastewater.

Water pollution from Heavy metal (HM) contamination poses a critical threat to environmental sustainability and public health. Industrial activities have increased the presence of HMs in wastewater, necessitating effective remediation strategies. Conventional methods like chemical precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane filtration are widely used but possess various limitations.

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) workers are exposed to bioaerosols containing bacteria, fungi, and endotoxin, potentially posing health risks to workers. This study quantified personal exposure levels to airborne bacteria and fungi, endotoxin, and dust among 44 workers during two seasons at four WWTPs. Associations between the exposure measurements and serum levels of biomarkers CRP, SAA, and CC16 were also assessed.

Phosphorus recovery through enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) processes from agricultural wastes holds promise in mitigating the impending global P shortage. However, the complex nutrient forms and the microbial augments, expected to exert a profound impact on crop rhizomicrobiome and thus crop health, remained unexplored. In this study, we investigated the impacts of EBPR biosolids on crops growth and rhizomicrobiome in comparison to chemical fertilizer and Vermont manure compost.
