AI Article Synopsis

  • Researchers successfully achieved selective double ring-opening polymerization of spiroorthoester monomers using a simple cationic alkyl gallium catalyst to create high-molecular-weight poly(ether--ester)s, averaging around 90 kDa.
  • The formation of these polymers was confirmed via NMR and IR spectroscopy techniques, ensuring the selective polymerization process.
  • The materials were extensively characterized for thermal and rheological properties, revealing well-entangled systems with unique viscoelastic behavior at both low and high frequencies, marking a significant advancement in polymer science.

Article Abstract

We report the selective double ring-opening polymerization of presequenced spiroorthoester monomers to form high-molecular-weight (≈90 kDa) poly(ether--ester)s with a simple cationic alkyl gallium catalyst. The selective formation of double ring-opened polymer units was confirmed by NMR and IR spectroscopies. Thermal and rheological properties of homo- and copolymers were further characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and stress-controlled rotational rheometry. Linear viscoelastic moduli show that these systems are well entangled (plateau modulus), thereby possessing nearly terminal relaxation at long time scales (low frequencies) and Rouse segmental dynamics at short time scales (high frequencies) with characteristic slopes. These are the highest-molecular-weight poly(ether--ester)s reported to date.

The excavation of the super-large cross-section tunnel portal section is prone to causing serious engineering distresses. The key factors to ensure the safe construction of portal section are to clarify the construction mechanic characteristics and select a reasonable construction scheme. In this paper, a bidirectional six-lane expressway tunnel in Southwest China was selected as an engineering case.

This study proposes and analyses a revised predator-prey model that accounts for a twofold Allee impact on the rate of prey population expansion. Employing the Caputo fractional-order derivative, we account for memory impact on the suggested model. We proceed to examine the significant mathematical aspects of the suggested model, including the uniqueness, non-negativity, boundedness, and existence of solutions to the noninteger order system.

PSMA-PET/CT Findings in Patients With High-Risk Biochemically Recurrent Prostate Cancer With No Metastatic Disease by Conventional Imaging.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Ahmanson Translational Theranostics Division, Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles.

Importance: The phase 3 randomized EMBARK trial evaluated enzalutamide with or without leuprolide in high-risk nonmetastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. Eligibility relied on conventional imaging, which underdetects metastatic disease compared with prostate-specific membrane antigen-positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET).

Objective: To describe the staging information obtained by PSMA-PET/computed tomography (PSMA-PET/CT) in a patient cohort eligible for the EMBARK trial.

Analysis of the hemivertebra resection strategy in adolescent and young adult congenital scoliosis caused by double hemivertebrae.

Spine Deform

January 2025

Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, Zhongshan Road 321, Nanjing, 210008, China.

Purpose: This study is to conduct a retrospective review of the selective resection strategies, their immediate efficacy and prognosis, using double hemivertebrae (DHV) as illustrative cases.

Methods: A total of 59 adolescent and young adult patients with DHV were enrolled from 2009 to 2021. They were categorized into sagittal kyphosis group (SKG), coronal takeoff group (CTG) and balanced group (BG).

To assess and compare two techniques of low-level laser application-transgingival (TLLLT) and intrasulcular (ILLLT)-used in photobiomodulation as an adjunct to basic periodontal therapy (BPT) in patients with periodontitis. A randomized, split-mouth, double-blind clinical trial was conducted, selecting three diseased periodontal sites from different quadrants in each patient. These sites were assigned to one of three treatment groups: SRP (control), SRP + TLLLT (test 1), and SRP + ILLLT (test 2).
