Sulfur-containing substances in sewers frequently incur unpleasant odors, corrosion-related economic loss, and potential human health concerns. These observations are principally attributed to microbial reactions, particularly the involvement of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in sulfur reduction process. As a multivalent element, sulfur engages in complex bioreactions in both aerobic and anaerobic environments. Organic sulfides are also present in sewage, and these compounds possess the potential to undergo transformation and volatilization. In this paper, a comprehensive review was conducted on the present status regarding sulfur transformation, transportation, and remediation in sewers, including both inorganic and organic sulfur components. The review extensively addressed reactions occurring in the liquid and gas phase, as well as examined detection methods for various types of sulfur compounds and factors affecting sulfur transformation. Current remediation measures based on corresponding mechanisms were presented. Additionally, the impacts of measures implemented in sewers on the subsequent wastewater treatment plants were also discussed, aiming to attain better management of the entire wastewater system. Finally, challenges and prospects related to the issue of sulfur-containing substances in sewers were proposed to facilitate improved management and development of the urban water system.

A method was found to construct sulfur-containing five- and six-membered heterocyclic alkyl sulfonyl compounds by using visible light and free radicals activated and/or generated by EDA complexes/homolytic cleavage as initiators to stimulate the relay reaction of alkynes/alkynones. This method puts forward a new strategy to initiate alkyl sulfonation of alkynes/alkynones with only a catalytic amount of the initiator. This strategy of generating the initiator by EDA complex activation/homolytic cleavage provides a new idea for the following substances that must be excited.

Microbial reduction of selenium oxyanions, highly soluble, mobile and toxic inorganic selenium compounds, to insoluble selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) is a widely spread phenomenon which is of geochemical, environmental and biotechnological importance. While selenite bioreduction is known for a wide variety of microorganisms, selenate bioreduction is not so common and has mostly been documented for anaerobes, with merely a few reported cases related to aerobic or microaerobic conditions. In some biogenic Se NPs of microbial origin, the presence of sulfur was detected together with selenium in Se NPs, particularly when increased concentrations of sulfate were present in the medium.

Nitrogen oxides (NO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main pollutants in flue gas, and the synergistic removal of NO and VOCs in the presence of SO is still a challenge. In this work, the microstructure of NiMnO-CeO catalysts and the distribution of sulfur-containing substances were studied to reveal the inactivation mechanism of sulfur poisoning. NO conversion could reach more than 80 % at 100-250 °C, and CH conversion could achieve 90 % at 210 °C in the synergistic reaction on NiMnO-CeO catalyst, which has dual active sites with propane oxidation and SCR reactions carried out at Mn and Ni sites, respectively.

Phytochemicals are nonnutritive substances found in plant foods that contribute significantly to the flavor and color of foods. These substances are usually classified as polyphenols, terpenes, sulfur-containing compounds, nitrogen-containing compounds, and others. Numerous studies over the last decades have demonstrated these substances play an immeasurable role in physiological regulation, health care, and disease prevention through their actions in antioxidation, anti-inflammation, antiaging, antivirus, anticancer, antithrombosis, lipid profile regulation, cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection, immunity regulation, and improvement of metabolic functions.

To prevent the residual sulfur dioxide in Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) caused by sulfur fumigation, which may lead to severe health issues, there is an urgent need for a rapid and quantitative detection technique. Sodium borohydride was used as a reducing agent to convert sulfur dioxide into hydrogen sulfide, which was then detected using lead acetate test strip. An accurate testing apparatus was designed, consisting of reaction bottle cap, reaction bottle, lead acetate test strip, and sulfur dioxide detector.
