Continuous sleep restores the brain and body, whereas fragmented sleep harms cognition and health. Microarousals (MAs), brief (3- to 15-s-long) wake intrusions into sleep, are clinical markers for various sleep disorders. Recent rodent studies show that MAs during healthy non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep are driven by infraslow fluctuations of noradrenaline (NA) in coordination with electrophysiological rhythms, vasomotor activity, cerebral blood volume, and glymphatic flow.

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson Missouri, sparking protests and civil unrest. Three studies have yielded inconsistent findings regarding the presence of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) in the aftermath of the unrest in Ferguson. Additional work is needed to understand how exposure to community-level stressors may correspond with trauma-related outcomes, as well as accounting for knowledge of, and engagement in the events.

Background: Psychological distress often co-occurs with sleep disturbances; but the specific mechanisms linking the two remain unclear. A qualitative study explored perceptions and factors associated with sleep disturbances in cancer survivors between patients with varying levels of psychological distress.

Methods: Thirty-three Cantonese speaking mixed type cancer survivors were recruited from a community cancer care program.

Study Objectives: A non-intrusive sleep monitoring technology based on the data from a commercially available depth sensing camera has been utilized for respiratory monitoring and shown to have good performance in assessing respiratory rates across a range of rates. This non-contact, or , technology allows continuous respiratory monitoring without attaching probes to the patient. We have noticed a strikingly similar morphology between the touchless flow signal (NCM) and the flow signal derived using the chest and abdomen respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) bands.

Article Synopsis
  • * It reviews pharmacological treatments for common sleep issues like REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), insomnia, and restless legs syndrome (RLS), emphasizing the use of melatonin, clonazepam, modafinil, and caffeine.
  • * The article suggests that optimizing dopaminergic treatments at night and maintaining good sleep hygiene can improve sleep quality, but more evidence is needed to widely recommend some of the therapies mentioned.
