New and efficient sensors of nerve agents are urgently demanded to prevent them from causing mass casualties in war or terrorist attacks. So, in this work, a novel hierarchical nanoheterostructure was synthesized via the direct growth of α-FeO nanorods onto multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) backbones. Then, the composites were functionalized with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and successfully applied to detect dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP)-sarin simulant gas. The observations show that the HFIP-α-FeO@MWCNT hybrids exhibit outstanding DMMP-sensing performance, including low operating temperature (220 °C), high response (6.0 to 0.1 ppm DMMP), short response/recovery time (8.7 s/11.9 s), as well as low detection limit (63.92 ppb). The analysis of the sensing mechanism demonstrates that the perfect sensing performance is mainly due to the synergistic effect of the chemical interaction of DMMP with the heterostructure and the physical adsorption of DMMP by hydrogen bonds with HFIP that are grafted on the α-FeO@MWCNTs composite. The huge specific surface area of HFIP-α-FeO@MWCNTs composite is also one of the reasons for this enhanced performance. This work not only offers a promising and effective method for synthesizing sensitive materials for high-performance gas sensors but also provides insight into the sensing mechanism of DMMP.

Design of hierarchical hollow nanoheterostructure materials through interfacial and defect engineering is an innovative approach for achieving optimal charge separation dynamics and photon harvesting efficiency. Herein, we have described a facile technique to fabricate hollow MOF-derived C, N-doped-CoO (C, N-CoO) dodecahedral particles enwrapped with MgInS nanosheets for enhanced N reduction performance. ZIF-67 was initially used as a sacrificial template to prepare hollow C, N-CoO using a carbonization route followed by low-temperature calcination treatment.

Rational design and preparation of high-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with effective sites and excellent mass/electron transfer structures are in demand for Zn-air batteries to overcome the sluggish oxygen reduction/evolution kinetics. Herein, a scalable and facile strategy is proposed to obtain brush-like Co/CoSe nanoheterostructures embedded in N-doped carbon catalysts with optimized active sites and hierarchical nanostructures. Systematic investigation indicates that nanoheterogeneous interfaces with appropriate composition deliver significantly improved electrochemical activity.

Water remediation techniques like photolysis have recently piqued the interest of many researchers due to water contamination resulting from heavy industrialization and urbanization. In the current work, as-synthesized TiO nanorod decorated vertically aligned silicon nanowire (SiNW) leads to a hierarchical morphological structure formation. The photocatalytic nature of the fabricated SiNW/TiO nanoheterojunction is examined by the dye degradation of textile pollutants like methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and eosin B (EB).

Combining multiple species working in tandem for different hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) steps is an effective strategy to design HER electrocatalysts. Here, we engineered a hierarchical electrode for the HER composed of amorphous-TiO/Cu nanorods (NRs) decorated with cost-effective Ru-Cu nanoheterostructures (Ru mass loading = 52 μg/cm). Such an electrode exhibits a stable, over 250 h, low overpotential of 74 mV at -200 mA/cm for the HER in 1 M NaOH.
