Cutaneous mucormycosis with ischemic complications is a life-threatening condition with high mortality rates, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. The incidence of mucormycosis has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due to reduced immunity. We present the case of a 17-year-old high school student who experienced a sprained left lower extremity, followed by worsening pain and swelling due to the topical application of unknown local herbs. Eighteen days after the injury, she was admitted to our department in a comatose state with left lower limb ischemia. The patient had a history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and displayed a necrotic lesion on her left ankle, suggestive of invasive infectious fungi disease. Diagnostic procedures, including tissue staining and molecular analysis, identified as the causative organism. Administering amphotericin B yielded marked improvement, but the patient necessitated a mid-thigh amputation to curtail the infection's advance, culminating in her successful discharge post-treatment.

The degeneration of pyramidal tracts has been reported in frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 (TAR DNA-binding protein 43) pathology (FTLD-TDP) type C. Herein, we examined the detailed pathology of the primary motor area and pyramidal tracts in the central nervous system in four autopsy cases of FTLD-TDP type C, all of which were diagnosed by neuropathological, biochemical, and genomic analyses. Three patients showed right dominant atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes, while the other patient showed left dominant atrophy.

When we listen to speech, our brain's neurophysiological responses "track" its acoustic features, but it is less well understood how these auditory responses are enhanced by linguistic content. Here, we recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses while subjects of both sexes listened to four types of continuous-speech-like passages: speech-envelope modulated noise, English-like non-words, scrambled words, and a narrative passage. Temporal response function (TRF) analysis provides strong neural evidence for the emergent features of speech processing in cortex, from acoustics to higher-level linguistics, as incremental steps in neural speech processing.

Background: Pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism (PA-VTE) seriously threatens maternal health. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, treatments, and pregnancy outcomes to better prevent and treat PA-VTE.
Methods: PA-VTE patients were selected from 171,898 women who were registered in the Department of Obstetrics of Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital from January 2014 to August 2023 and delivered to calculate the incidence.

Introduction: Perceived groove, a complex and integrated musical characteristic, is considered a core factor in inducing synchronization between movement and music. This study aimed to employ functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the effective connectivity (EC) changes among brain regions during cycling activities under different perceived groove conditions.
Methods: In a randomized crossover design, 18 university students performed 3-min cycling tasks under high (HG) and low (LG) perceived groove music conditions.

Purpose: Findings from previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies disagreed with the current scientific consensus regarding the role of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior in ischemic stroke (IS). We reassessed these associations with a focus on etiological subtypes of IS and the potential mediating roles of cardiometabolic traits and brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs).
Methods: We performed MR analyses using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies of sedentary behavior and PA (n = 88,411~608,595), cardiometabolic traits (n = 393,193~694,649), brain IDPs (n = 33,224) and the latest IS data (62,100 cases and 1,234,808 controls).
