Photocatalytic conversion of CO into fuels such as CO, CH, and CHOH, is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, where X = Cl, Br, and I) are appropriate photocatalysts for this purpose due to the merits of visible-light-active, efficient charge separation, and easy-to-modify crystal structure and surface properties. For practical applications, multiple strategies have been proposed to develop high-efficiency BiOX-based photocatalysts. This review summarizes the development of different approaches to prepare BiOX-based photocatalysts for efficient CO reduction. In the review, the fundamentals of photocatalytic CO reduction are introduced. Then, several widely used modification methods for BiOX photocatalysts are systematacially discussed, including heterojunction construction, introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs), Bi-enrichment, heteroatom-doping, and morphology design. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the design of future BiOX-based photocatalysis for efficient CO reduction are examined.

The photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of toluene (as model aromatic volatile organic compound (VOC)) is studied using two-dimensional semiconductors (bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX (X = Cl and Br)) synthesized with surface defects (BiOX-R (R = reduction)) through a solvothermal-induced reduction process. The PCD efficiency of BiOCl-R against 5 ppm toluene (20 % relative humidity (RH)) is 98.6 % under ultraviolet light irradiation with the quantum yield and clean air delivery rate of 1.

Li-O batteries (LOBs) boast an exceptionally high theoretical energy density; however, the slow kinetics of the oxygen electrode reaction have been a significant hurdle in their advancement and practical application. In this study, a composite of bismuth oxyhalide heterojunction incorporated with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was engineered on carbon cloth (Zr-MOF/BiOIBr/CC) as an efficient bifunctional catalyst to enhance the oxygen electrode reaction in photo-assisted LOBs. Compared to Zr-MOF/CC, Zr-MOF/BiOIBr/CC significantly expands the light absorption spectrum of the catalyst.

Exquisitely tailoring the morphologies of photocatalysts could achieve high activities. In this study, the morphological transformation of bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X = Br, I and Cl) from disordered lamellae to regular flowers was facilely achieved via the use of carboxylated cellulose-derived carbon (CDC). The sphere-like structure and abundant surface functional groups of CDC induce the formation of such flower-like morphologies of BiOX/CDC, and this morphology results in a pronounced increase in surface area (e.
