For several decades, the development of potential flexible electronics, such as electronic skin, wearable technology, environmental monitoring systems, and the internet of Things network, has been emphasized. In this context, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are highly regarded due to their simple design, high output performance, and cost-effectiveness. On a smaller scale, self-powered sensor research and development based on piezo-triboelectric hybrid nanogenerators have lately become more popular. When a material in the TENG is a piezoelectric material, these two distinct effects can be coupled. Herein, we developed a multimode hybrid piezo-triboelectric nanogenerator using the CsPbI-PVDF composite. The addition of CsPbI to PVDF significantly enhances its electroactive phase and dielectric property, thereby enhancing its surface charge density. 5 wt % CsPbI incorporation in poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) results in a high electroactive phase () value of >90%. Moreover, CsPbI-PVDF composite-based PENGs were fabricated in three modes, viz., nanogenerators in contact-separation mode (TECS), single electrode mode (TESE), and sliding mode (TES), and the output performance of all the devices was investigated. The fabricated TECS, TESE, and TES reveal peak output powers of 3.08, 1.29, and 0.15 mW at an external load of 5.6 MΩ. Through analysis of the contact angle measurement and experimental quantification, the hydrophilicity of the composite film has been identified. The hydrophobicity and moisture absorption capacity of CsPbI-PVDF film make it an attractive option for self-powered humidity monitoring. The TENGs effectively powered several low-powered electronic devices with just a few human finger taps. This study offers a high-performance PTENG device that is reliant on ambient humidity, which is a helpful step toward creating a self-powered sensor.

The upcoming era of flexible and wearable electronics necessitates the development of low-cost, flexible, biocompatible substrates amenable to the fabrication of active devices such as electronic devices, sensors and transducers. While natural biopolymers such as Silk are robust and biocompatible, long-term flexibility is a concern due to the inherent brittle nature of soft Silk thin films. This work elucidates the preparation and characterization of Silk-polyurethane (Silk-PU) composite film that provides long-duration flexibility.

New Composite Materials Based on PVA, PVP, CS, and PDA.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Biomaterials and Cosmetic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Gagarina 7, 87-100 Torun, Poland.

In this work, new materials based on the blends of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), chitosan (CS), and polydopamine (PDA) have been prepared. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra have been conducted to verify the presence of individual components in the composite materials. EDX elemental analysis showed a clear view of the element's presence in the composite materials, with the maximum values for carbon and oxygen.

The need to optimize size, weight, and power of high-power microwave (HPM) systems has motivated the development of solid-state HPM sources, such as nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs), which utilize gyromagnetic precession or dispersion to generate RF. One recent development implemented the NLTL as a pulse forming line (PFL) to form a nonlinear pulse forming line (NPFL) system that substantially reduced the system's size by eliminating the need for a separate PFL; however, matching standard loads can be challenging. This paper describes the development of a tapered NPFL using an exponentially tapered composite based ferrite core containing 60% nickel zinc ferrite (by volume) encased in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and encapsulated in a 5% barium strontium titanate shell.

Three-dimensional (3D) sensors selectively measure the applied force in a particular direction through the designed shape. However, such a fixed sensor design incurs a relatively low sensitivity and narrow measurement range to forces applied from other directions. Here, we report a shape-reconfigurable electronic composite based on a stiffness-tunable polymer and a crack-based strain sensor.
