The heterostructure of transition-metal chalcogenides is a promising approach to boost alkali ion storage due to fast charge kinetics and reduction of activation energy. However, cycling performance is a paramount challenge that is suffering from poor reversibility. Herein, it is reported that Se-rich particles can chemically interact with local hexagonal ZnSe/MnSe@C heterostructure environment, leading to effective ions insertion/extraction, enabling high reversibility. Enlightened by theoretical understanding, Se-rich particles endow high intrinsic conductivities in term of low energy barriers (1.32 eV) compared with those without Se-rich particles (1.50 eV) toward the sodiation process. Moreover, p orbitals of Se-rich particles may actively participate and further increase the electronegativity that pushes the Mn d orbitals (dxy and dx-y) and donate their electrons to dxz and dyz orbitals, manifesting strong d-d orbitals interaction between ZnSe and MnSe. Such fundamental interaction will adopt a well-stable conducive electronic bridge, eventually, charges are easily transferred from ZnSe to MnSe in the heterostructure during sodiation/desodiation. Therefore, the optimized Se-rich ZnSe/MnSe@C electrode delivered high capacity of 576 mAh g at 0.1 A g after 100 cycles and 384 mAh g at 1 A g after 2500 cycles, respectively. In situ and ex situ measurements further indicate the integrity and reversibility of the electrode materials upon charging/discharging.

Recovery of Selenium-Enriched Polysaccharides from Residues: Comparison on Structure and Antioxidant Activity by Different Extraction Methods.

Antioxidants (Basel)

October 2024

School of Modern Industry for Selenium Science and Engineering, National R&D Center for Se-Rich Agricultural Products Processing Technology, Wuhan Polytechnic University, Wuhan 430023, China.

The residues from selenium-enriched after the extraction of protein were still rich in polysaccharides. Thus, the recovery of selenium polysaccharides (SePSs) was compared using hot water extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction techniques. The yield, extraction rate, purity, specific energy consumption, and content of total and organic selenium from different SePS extracts were determined.

Article Synopsis
  • - The industrial process for making kudzu starch often reduces flavonoids like puerarin, so pretreatments such as ultrasonic techniques are important to enhance its biological activity and nutrient interactions.
  • - Ultrasonic pretreatment increased the binding of puerarin to kudzu starch and changed the particle size, leading to larger complexes compared to untreated samples, as revealed by various analyses.
  • - The study found that ultrasound altered how the starch molecules interacted, creating new hydrogen bonds and resulting in gels with improved properties like higher viscosity and elasticity, showing the potential for more valuable kudzu products.

In this study, a whey protein isolate (WPI)-chitooligosaccharide (COS) stabilized bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) seed oil emulsions (WC-BSOE) were prepared using the electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, and their modulating effects on ulcerative colitis (UC) were investigated in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC mice model. The stability and releasing ability of WC-BSOE under simulated gastrointestinal digestion condition and their acute toxicity were also investigated.

Acting as a growth regulator, Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is an important phytohormone that can be produced by several species. However, few studies have been published on the comprehensive evaluation of the strains for practical applications and the effects of selenium species on their IAA-producing ability. The present study showed the selenite reduction strain LH18, which is capable of producing selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) at a high yield in a cost-effective manner.
