Assume a can opener.

Published: February 2024

We propose a friendly amendment to integrative experiment design (IED), adversarial-collaboration IED, that incentivizes research teams from competing theoretical perspectives to identify zones of the design space where they possess an explanatory edge. This amendment is especially critical in debates that have high policy stakes and carry a strong normative-political charge that might otherwise prevent free exchange of ideas.

Case-Informed Learning in Medical Education: A Call for Ontological Fidelity.

Perspect Med Educ

April 2023

Department of Continuing Professional Development and Medical Education, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

We contend that the cases at the heart of case-informed learning are philosophical artefacts that reveal traditional positivist orientations of medical education and medicine, more broadly, through their centering scientific knowledge and objective fact.

6-Sulfonylchromenes as highly potent K(ATP)-channel openers.

J Med Chem

February 2002

Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Heinrich-Heine-Universität, Universitätsstrasse 1, D-40225 Düsseldorf, Germany.

We synthesized K(ATP)-channel openers (KCOs) composed of the 4-pyridonechromene moiety of bimakalim (1) and a variety of sulfonyl-containing 6-substituents 4-29. Dilator potencies were measured in rat aorta and trachea. In both test systems the KCOs exhibit potency ranges of roughly 3 log units.

Pharmacological agents for the treatment of urinary incontinence due to overactive bladder.

Expert Opin Investig Drugs

January 2001

Division of Urology, University of Pennsylvania Health System, First Floor Rhoads Pavilion, 3400 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA.

Although the exact aetiology of overactive bladder is unknown to date, pharmacological therapy has been targeted to both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Potential CNS targets include GABA, opioid, serotonin (5-HT), dopamine and glutaminergic receptors as well as the alpha-adrenoceptors. Potential PNS targets include muscarinic receptors, calcium and potassium channels and alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors.
