We disagree with Almaatouq et al. that no realistic alternative exists to the "one-at-a-time" paradigm. Seventy years ago, Egon Brunswik introduced , which offers a clear path to commensurability and generality. Almaatouq et al.'s cannot guarantee the external validity and generalizability of results which is sorely needed, while tackles the problem head on.

The application of antimicrobial surfaces requires proof of their effectivity by methods in laboratories. One of the most common test methods is ISO 22196:2011, which represents a simple and inexpensive protocol by applying the bacterial suspension with known volume and concentration covered under a polyethylene film on the surfaces. The incubation is then conducted under defined humidity conditions for 24 h.

Data-driven model discovery and model selection for noisy biological systems.

Biological systems exhibit complex dynamics that differential equations can often adeptly represent. Ordinary differential equation models are widespread; until recently their construction has required extensive prior knowledge of the system. Machine learning methods offer alternative means of model construction: differential equation models can be learnt from data via model discovery using sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy).

Introduction: Qualitative and quantitative testing of ethanol in samples is an important analytical procedure that provides accurate, precise, and reliable results. Given the complexity of the issue, obtaining a realistic picture of lifelong alcoholemia requires supporting blood ethanol findings with analyses of alternative samples, primarily vitreous humor (VH).

Objective: The objective of this study was to develop and validate a headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS/GC-FID) method for determining ethanol concentration in VH.

The administration of surfactant aerosol therapy to preterm infants receiving continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) respiratory support is highly challenging due to small flow passages, relatively high ventilation flow rates, rapid breathing and small inhalation volumes. To overcome these challenges, the objective of this study was to implement a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and develop an overlay nasal prong interface design for use with CPAP respiratory support that enables high efficiency powder aerosol delivery to the lungs of preterm infants when needed (i.e.

Cost Effectiveness of Fixation Versus Total Hip Arthroplasty in Vancouver B2 Periprosthetic Femur Fractures: A Predictive Markov Analysis.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

January 2025

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA (Scott, Blackburn, Prasad, Lim, Lavoie-Gagne, Melnic, and Bedair), and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, MA (Scott, Blackburn, Prasad, Lim, Melnic, and Bedair).

Background: Although Vancouver B2 periprosthetic fractures (PPFs) have been historically managed with revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA), open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) has been proposed as an alternative option for reasons including lower cost and surgical time. The purpose of this study was to, therefore, create a Markov model to assess the cost effectiveness of ORIF versus rTHA for Vancouver B2 periprosthetic femur fractures and evaluate various inflection points for varying costs and outcome measures.

Methods: A Markov model was built using discrete and mutually exclusive health states of the hypothetical patient with Vancouver B2 PPF.
