Background: Titanium dioxide (TiO) is banned in some countries but its use is still permitted in others. The global food supply chain is therefore challenged with the need to use rapid and reliable testing methods to either detect the presence of TiO or to quantify its concentration. The goal of this study was to determine the feasibility of using color, texture profile analysis, Raman microscopy, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy to detect and quantify TiO in fillings used in the pastry and confectionery industry. In this study, two types of fillings were investigated: vanilla based and chocolate based. All fillings were prepared in four different variations - without TiO and with three concentrations as follows: 0.25 g*kg, 0.5 g*kg, or 0.75 g*kg TiO per sample. The methods were selected for their ability to analyze the samples in a short period of time.
Results: All of the methods showed moderate to high potential for detecting TiO in the samples. The results reveal how TiO affects the food matrix color and texture. Use of Raman microscopy confirms its detectability, although concentrations of TiO do not follow a pattern. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy showed the greatest potential as it can not only detect TiO but can also quantify its concentration in the samples.
Conclusions: The highest potential for quantifying the concentration of this food additive was achieved with XRF. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The use of metal oxide catalysts to enhance plasma CO reduction has seen significant recent development towards processes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce renewable chemical feedstocks. While plasma reactors are effective at producing the intended chemical transformations, the conditions can result in catalyst degradation. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be used to synthesize complex, hierarchically structured metal oxide plasma catalysts that, while active for plasma CO reduction, are potentially vulnerable to degradation due to their high surface area and nanoscopic thickness.

Industrial organic dyes represent a significant portion of pollutants discharged into the environment, particularly by the textile industry. These compounds pose serious threats to living organisms due to their high toxicity. Various techniques have been explored for the degradation of organic dyes, among which heterogeneous photocatalysis utilising titanium dioxide (TiO) stands out as a promising technology.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS), carbonyl sulfide (COS), and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) are the primary sulfur compounds found in seawater, which cause pitting corrosion on the oxide passivation film of titanium, known as "the marine metals". In this study, density functional theory (DFT) was used to analyze the adsorption and surface electronic properties of these three small molecules on the anatase TiO(101) surface. The analysis was conducted through adsorption energy, work function, Mulliken charge population, and density of states (DOS).

Glucose-dependent insulin delivery systems have been recognized as a promising approach for controlling blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). Recently, titanium dioxide nanoparticles have garnered huge attention in scientific research for their small size and effective drug delivery capabilities. In this study, we developed alizarin (AL)-capped phenylboronic acid (PBA)-functionalized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO) for glucose-sensitive insulin delivery (TiO-PBA-INS-AL) aiming to manage both blood sugar levels and its associated organ pathology in DM.

The growing modern industry has promoted the development of gas sensors for environmental monitoring and safety checks. However, the traditional chemical resistance gas sensor still has some disadvantages such as high power consumption and limited detection, mainly due to the lack of charge transfer ability of sensing materials. In this paper, an ordered UV-activated gas sensor with mesoporous ZnO/TiO nanotube composite was prepared by precisely controlling the growth of ZnO on the inner wall of TiO nanotube.
