Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom.

Background: Early adversity has been reported as a risk factor for dementia. Adverse maternal control (MC) during childhood is believed to impact neural developmental pathways. Here we studied the associations between adverse MC and the volume of the dorsal striatum in older adults given evidence from the childhood adversity literature of structural reductions and altered reward processing.

Background: Whether history of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) contributes to cognitive decline in later life is not understood because few cohorts have information on pregnancy history and later-life cognition. We hypothesized that history of any APO would be related to lower global cognition and faster cognitive decline among older adults, compared to no APO history.

Method: The Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) Study is a prospective cohort study embedded in an integrated health care system of adults aged 65 and older without dementia at enrollment.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Background: Matrescence, like adolescence, is a critical period for neurodevelopment characterized by hormonal changes that reshape the brain in preparation for new experiences and subsequent learning. Women exhibit greater age-matched Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk than men, yet little is known about long-term neurological health consequences of reproduction (Buckley, 2019), the defining biological difference between the sexes. We tested the hypothesis that greater number of months pregnant would be positively associated with cortical thickness (CT), particularly in regions within the default mode network (DMN).

This study applies the Gaussian process progression model, a Bayesian data-driven disease progression model, to analyse the evolution of primary progressive multiple sclerosis. Utilizing data from 1521 primary progressive multiple sclerosis participants collected within the International Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Alliance Project, the analysis includes 18 581 longitudinal time-points (average follow-up time: 28.2 months) of disability assessments including the expanded disability status scale, symbol digit modalities, timed 25-foot-walk, 9-hole-peg test and of MRI metrics such as T1 and T2 lesion volume and normalized brain volume.

Purpose: Autistic children have an increased likelihood of anxiety, but more research is needed on the characteristics that predict various types of anxiety in this population.

Methods: In this study, we examined a range of child and family predictors of various types of anxiety using a sample of 452 autistic children from the Australian Autism Biobank. We used logistic regression to examine child and family predictors of four common types of anxiety in autistic children: generalised, phobic, separation, and social anxiety.
