Piezoresistive layered two-dimensional (2D) crystals offer intriguing promise as pressure sensors for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) due to their remarkable strain-induced conductivity modulation. However, integration of the conventional chemical vapor deposition grown 2D thin films onto a micromachined silicon platform requires a complex transfer process, which degrades their strain-sensing performance. In this study, we present a differential pressure sensor built on a transfer-free piezoresistive PdSepolycrystalline film deposited on a SiNmembrane by plasma-enhanced selenization of a metal film at a temperature as low as 200 °C. Based on the resistance change and finite element strain analysis of the film under membrane deflection, we show that a 7.9 nm thick PdSefilm has a gauge factor (GF) of -43.3, which is ten times larger than that of polycrystalline silicon. The large GF enables the development of a diaphragm pressure sensor with a high sensitivity of 3.9 × 10kPawithin the differential pressure range of 0-60 kPa. In addition, the sensor with a Wheatstone bridge circuit achieves a high voltage sensitivity of 1.04 mV·kPa, a rapid response time of less than 97 ms, and small output voltage variation of 8.1 mV in the temperature range of 25 °C to 55 °C. This transfer-free and low-temperature grown PdSepiezoresistive thin film is promising for MEMS transducer devices.

Physical Simulation Experiment on the Rock Breaking Efficiency of Pulse Type Controllable Shock Wave.

ACS Omega

December 2024

Shenmu Ningtiaota Mining Company, Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group, Shenmu, Shaanxi 719300, China.

Given that conducting controllable shock wave tests in actual rock formations underground in coal mines affects coal mine production with the parameters required for equipment design and incurs significant costs, a series of ground tests were conducted separately. First, the impact of energy storage on rock breaking efficiency was analyzed. Then, physical simulation experiments were conducted on the differential efficiency of controllable shock waves on high-strength cement, sandstone, granite, solid granite, and limestone.

Background And Aims: Accumulating evidence indicates that reducing high blood pressure (BP) prevents dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Furthermore, although diabetes is a risk factor for dementia and MCI, there is uncertainty of the effect of intensive glucose control on these endpoints. This study aimed to determine the effects of BP-lowering (vs placebo) and intensive glucose-lowering (vs standard control) treatments according to baseline cognition and other characteristics on dementia and cognitive decline (CD) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Reinforcing chemically treated human hair with citric acid.

Int J Cosmet Sci

January 2025

L'Oréal Research & Innovation, Aulnay-sous-Bois, France.

Objective: The objective of this work was to conduct a systematic study to evaluate the performance of citric acid (CA), an example of a commonly used organic acid in hair cosmetics, on different types of chemically treated hair and to better understand how CA works.

Methods: Consumer-centric routines were used to prepare the chemically treated hair, namely high-lift bleached, middle-lift bleached, permanently coloured and a combination of permed and coloured hair. Hair was subsequently treated with CA and hair reinforcement was investigated by physical techniques: High Pressure Differential Scanning Calorimetry (HPDSC), Miniature Tensile Test (MTT), Cyclic Fatigue Tensile Test (CFTT) & Micro X-ray Diffraction (μXRD) as well as chemical analysis (elemental, amino acids).

The ethics of care and justice represent two modes of moral reasoning that nurses use in solving real-life ethical dilemmas. The present study investigated what types of dilemmas nurses encounter in everyday work and to what extent they use care versus justice reasoning to solve them. The study used a cross-sectional survey design.
