Via rational molecular structure design and using gallic acid (GA) for hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), the "polymer dipole" CNF-GA with hydrophilic main chains and hydrophobic side chains was prepared, which improved the poor piezoelectric properties of CNF used for preparing pressure sensors. Due to the appearance of the side chains, the elongation at break of the CNF-GA-2, compared with CNF, was enhanced by 186 %, and the excellent tensile strength, puncture load, and tearing strength were displayed. Moreover, the significant glass transition temperature (T) near the human body temperature was exhibited for CNF-GA, making it possible to be applied in temperature sensing. Most importantly, the CNF-GA-2 showed the maximum hydrophobicity, with a contact angle of 76.77°. Finally, the CNF-GA-2/MXene nanocomposite film was prepared by the CNF-GA-2 with MXene through vacuum filtration. The results indicated that the film had excellent piezoelectric properties (d = 63.283), the generated stable induced voltage (125.6 mV), the preferable piezoresistive performance (ΔR/R = 2.15), the fast response/recovery time (48/61 ms), which could achieve dynamic and static responses. Moreover, this film could be used for real-time detection of limb movements (such as wrists).

Catechol-derived polymers form stable coatings on a wide range of materials including challenging to coat low surface energy polymers. Whether modification of the coating polymer with fluorophilic or hydrophobic groups is a successful approach to further favor the coating of hydrophobic or fluorophilic surfaces with catechol-based polymers remains ambiguous. Herein, we report the effect of a series of catechol-derived polyglycerol (PG)-based coatings and monolayer coatings on the wettability of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces.

Hydroxylation, an extensive post-translational modification on proline, is critical for the modulation of protein structures, further dominating their functions in life systems. However, current mass spectrometry-based identification, could hardly distinguish hydroxylation from neighboring oxidation due to the same mass shifts, as well as challenges posed by low abundance and exogenous oxidation during sample preparation. To address these, an engineered nanopore was designed, capable of discriminating single hydroxyl group, to achieve the identification of proline hydroxylation on individual native peptides directly in the mixture.

Polymyxins are last-resort antimicrobial peptides administered clinically against multi-drug resistant bacteria, specifically in the case of Gram-negative species. However, an increasing number of these pathogens employ a defense strategy that involves a relay of enzymes encoded by the pmrE (ugd) loci and the arnBCDTEF operon. The pathway modifies the lipid-A component of the outer membrane (OM) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by adding a 4-amino-4-deoxy-l-arabinose (L-Ara4N) headgroup, which renders polymyxins ineffective.

Due to its commercial availability and well-defined structure, the interaction between bovine protein β-lactoglobulin (βLG) and a wide variety of non-native ligands - including transition metal complexes - has been explored, but its application as an artificial metalloenzyme scaffold is limited. This protein is hypothesized to transport fatty acids and other nutrients during juvenile development, and it binds hydrophobic ligands inside a binding pocket constructed upon an 8-stranded β-barrel, called the 'calyx'. Herein, we compare the binding behavior of two rhenium(anthracene-bispyridine) ('Anth-py') tricarbonyl complexes, one with a 12‑carbon chain appended to the ligand scaffold ('Anth-py') to βLG.

Liposome-based drug delivery technologies have showed potential in enhancing medication safety and efficacy. Innovative drug loading and release mechanisms highlighted in this review of next-generation liposomal formulations. Due to poor drug release kinetics and loading capacity, conventional liposomes have limited clinical use.
