The Salton Sea (SS), California's largest inland lake at 816 square kilometers, formed in 1905 from a levee breach in an area historically characterized by natural wet-dry cycles as Lake Cahuilla. Despite more than a century of untreated agricultural drainage inputs, there has not been a systematic assessment of nutrient loading, cycling, and associated ecological impacts at this iconic waterbody. The lake is now experiencing unprecedented degradation, particularly following the 2003 Quantification Settlement Agreement-the largest agricultural-to-urban water transfer in the United States.

My research has derived inspiration from a variety of sources, such as contemporary and historical research doyens in the ophthalmic field and beyond, artists, Greek philosophers, and abstract constructs such as principles and adages. A given moment of inspiration can range from being a profound experience to a subtle realization during a quiet moment of reflection.

This paper examines the intersection of environmental history and the history of science, specifically the impact of forestry science and fire management on land use and community dynamics in rural Portuguese mountains. It further traces the evolution of fire management from an ancestral rural practice to a scientific concern and the subsequent integration of vernacular knowledge with scientific methods. In the early twentieth century, fire was a common tool in rural Portugal for land clearance, pasture management, and soil enrichment.

A total of 57 European, Canadian and North American postage stamps, all in red shades, were analyzed with the main goal of unraveling which pigments or dyes were used to produce the red color in the period dated from 1841 to 1899. Both non-destructive techniques, including X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectra (FORS), and Steady State Fluorescence Spectroscopy, and destructive methods such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) and Electrospray Ionization High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (ESI-HRMS), were utilized for a comprehensive analysis. The examined red shades were identified as originating from either a single pigment or dye, or a combination of both.
