A helical structural support scheme is proposed to mechanically support dielectric layers in a hollow-core terahertz Bragg waveguide by means of an axially rotating wrap-around strip structure. The helical-strip supported waveguide samples are fabricated using 3D printing technology, and the waveguide samples are experimentally tested using a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system. The results show that choosing a suitable helix period can obtain loss characteristics close to those of an ideal Bragg waveguide, with a low transmission loss of less than 0.097 dB/m in the range of 0.57-0.58 THz.

Critical Design and Operating Parameters of Active Waveguide Bragg Gratings for Laser Performance.

Active waveguide Bragg gratings (AWBGs) are promising photonic structures that combine the very efficient reflective properties of a Bragg grating with the power amplification character of rare earths. This combination may lead to a potential monolithic laser under the proper conditions. However, the photonic response of these structures highly depends on the grating design and operating parameters, so modeling its response for their laser performance is a must.

A wavelength demodulation method for ultra-short fiber Bragg grating (US-FBG) sensors based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a convex optimization algorithm is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of measuring the output power ratio of the two adjacent AWG channels as previously done, in this work the wavelength demodulation is realized by reconstructing the US-FBG spectrum. The principle of spectral reconstruction involves using an AWG to sample the spectral information of US-FBG and constructing underdetermined matrix equations with the obtained prior information on transmission responses and the detected output power from multiple AWG channels.

Grating-assisted, contra-directional couplers (GA-CDCs), owing to their four-port operations, can offer several important advantages over traditional, single waveguide-based Bragg gratings. However, how to flexibly design the spectral responses of GA-CDCs has been much less studied. We report the spectral tailoring methodology of GA-CDCs to achieve arbitrary, physically realizable, complex spectral responses.

Article Synopsis
  • A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) demodulation system using arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) has been developed, integrating key components like photodiode arrays and transimpedance amplifiers.
  • The system features eight output channels, with signals processed for high-speed transmission via Ethernet, resulting in a compact design measuring 200 × 100 × 60 mm.
  • Experimental results indicate the system achieves a wavelength demodulation accuracy of 4.24 pm and can handle demodulation rates exceeding 200 kHz, making it suitable for high-frequency vibration sensing applications.

Silicon photonic waveguide resonators, such as microring resonators, photonic crystal waveguide cavities, and Fabry-Perot resonators based on the distributed Bragg reflectors, are key device components for silicon-based photonic integrated circuits (Si-PIC). For the Si-PIC with high integration density, the device footprints of the conventional photonic waveguide resonators need to be more compact. Inverse design, which is operated by the design expectation and different from the conventional design methods, has been investigated for reducing the photonic device components nowadays.
