Purpose: Our purpose was to determine and model the dose-response relations of different parts of the pelvis regarding the endpoint of hematocrit level drop after pelvic radiation therapy (RT).

Methods And Materials: Two hundred and twenty-one patients treated with RT for prostate adenocarcinoma between 2014 and 2016 were included. All patients had complete blood counts collected at baseline and 3 months post-RT. The net difference of hematocrit level post-RT versus baseline was calculated, and the level of the 15th percentiles defined the thresholds of response in each case. The doses to 8 different pelvic structures were derived and fitted to the hematocrit levels using the relative seriality normal tissue complication probability model and the biologically equivalent uniform dose ().

Results: Pelvic structures that correlated with significant decreases in hematocrit were the os coxae bilaterally superior to the acetabulum (OCUB), the total os coxae bilaterally, and the bone volume of the whole pelvis. The structure showing the highest correlation was OCUB with a maximum area under the curve (AUC) of 0.74. For V20 Gy < 30% the odds ratio was 9.8 with 95% CI of 2.9 to 32.9. For mean dose (D) to OCUB, an AUC of 0.73 was observed where the dose threshold was 23 Gy and the odds ratio was 2.7 and 95% CI 1.3 to 5.6. The values for the D50, γ, and s parameters of the relative seriality model were 26.9 Gy (25.9-27.9), 1.3 (1.2-2.2), and 0.12 (0.10-0.83), respectively. The AUC of was 0.73 and patients with to OCUB ≥ 27 Gy had 8.2 times higher rate of significant hematocrit drop versus <27 Gy.

Conclusions: These findings confirm the association of radiation-induced damage to pelvic bone marrow with a drop in hematocrit. A threshold of V20 Gy < 30%, D < 23 Gy, or < 27 Gy to OCUB may significantly reduce the risk for this endpoint.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients undergoing percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP), and identify the factors influencing hidden blood loss (HBL).

Methods: This randomized, placebo-controlled trial included 146 patients undergoing PKP surgery from September 2023 to July 2024. Patients were randomly assigned into the TXA group (75 patients received 1.

Background: Anemia is a global health issue that affects over 1 billion people and contributes to maternal mortality and birth defects. Low-resource, tropical areas face a dual challenge: high prevalence of anemia and inability to access affordable testing methods. The falling drop hemoglobin method has been developed by our lab to quantify hemoglobin concentration and assess anemia by timing the descent of venous blood in a column of copper sulfate solution, without using electricity or batteries.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of thermal manipulation during incubation on the hatchability, the performance, the carcass characteristics, the intestinal villi, the nutrient metabolizability, and some physiological parameters in broiler chickens. Ross eggs were randomly distributed into four commercial automatic incubators. The treatments were as follows: incubator kept at 37.

Article Synopsis
  • This study conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing preoperative misoprostol to control treatments in women undergoing abdominal myomectomies, covering data from six databases until April 2024.
  • It analyzed 16 trials involving 975 women and found many studies had a low quality or biases, but the results indicated that misoprostol significantly reduced intraoperative blood loss, hemoglobin drop, and the need for blood transfusions compared to control.
  • Additionally, misoprostol led to shorter operative times and hospital stays, although there was no significant difference in postoperative fever rates between the two groups.

Article Synopsis
  • This study introduces a microfluidic device designed to efficiently separate white blood cells (WBCs) from red blood cells (RBCs) for the Nitroblue Tetrazolium (NBT) bioassay, which measures phagocytic activity in cells.
  • The device successfully removes 99.99% of RBCs from WBC samples, improving the RBC to WBC ratio from 848:1 to 2:3, and is effective even at a hematocrit concentration of 1% blood.
  • The microfluidic device is easy to fabricate, cost-effective, and can process a single drop of blood in under 10 minutes, without the need for complex methods like RBC lysis or expensive
