AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to assess how common Stafne's bone cavity is in a Venezuelan population and to describe its features through imaging.
  • Out of 500 panoramic x-rays analyzed, 22 cases (4.4%) showed Stafne's bone cavities, with a majority (77.3%) being unilateral and occurring more frequently in male patients (63.63%).
  • The radiographic traits included a higher prevalence in the posterior mandibular area (81.81%), a round shape (59.09%), and only partial radiolucency (72%).

Article Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of the Stafne´s bone cavity in a Venezuelan population and to characterize it radiographically.

Method: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Of 500 panoramic radiographs, those that had radiolucent images in the mandible, circumscribed and not associated with any dental organ, as well as those that could correspond to the mandibular fossa, were selected. Results were collated and discrepancies resolved by consensus. The selected ones were characterized radiographically. The variables were compared using the student's t test for equality of means, applying the Levene test, values of p <0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results: Of the 500 radiographs evaluated, 22 presented images corresponding to deep mandibular fossa or Stafne bone cavities, which represented 4.4%. Of which 5 presented bilaterally (22.7%) and 17 (77, 3%) unilocularly. Among the radiographic characteristics studied, images located in the posterior area (81.81%), without sclerosis (54.54%), continuous to the basal mandibular area, round shape (59.09%) and partial radiolucency (72%) were presented with a higher prevalence). They were more common in male patients with 63.63%.

Conclusions: Our results show a higher prevalence of Stafne's bone cavity in a Venezuelan population than that reported in other studies in other populations.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the dental and skeletal stability one year after Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) by using 3D image data.

Methods: Patients with transverse maxillary deficiency from the age of 16 onwards were enrolled consecutively in this prospective longitudinal cohort study. The MARPE appliance was digitally and individually designed and fabricated.

Background: Molariform second premolar is a rare dental anomaly where the second premolar resembles a molar in size and shape. This condition is often linked to macrodontia, a rare enlargement of teeth that disrupts dental proportions and can manifest in isolated, relative, or generalized forms. Although mandibular second premolars are more prone to morphological variability, the occurrence of bilateral molariform premolars, induced by a unique form of gemination, is exceptionally uncommon and infrequently documented, thus making this case clinically significant.

Background: The oral cavity is a complex environment which harbours the second largest and most diverse microflora after the gastrointestinal tract. The bacteriome in the oral cavity plays a pivotal role in promoting the health and well-being of human beings. Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gingival tissue, arises due to plaque accumulation on the teeth, often leads to periodontitis.

Background: This retrospective study aims to characterise the root canal morphology of maxillary and mandibular second molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The number of roots and canal configurations were evaluated using both the Vertucci and Benjamı´n Brisen˜ o Marroquı´n classification systems.

Methods: A total of 1084 second molar images (523 maxillary; 266 right and 257 left side and 561 mandibular; 285 right and 276 left side) were evaluated from 320 CBCT scans analyzed for the Turkish subpopulation.

Intra-articular injection has emerged as a promising approach for treating knee osteoarthritis (OA), showing notable efficacy and potential. However, the risk of side effects remains a concern with the commonly used steroid therapies in clinical practice. Here, we developed an intra-articular injectable hydrogel drug depot (SMN-CeO@G) for sustained OA treatment.
