Introduction: Lenvatinib and sorafenib are key therapeutic agents for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there are no useful biomarkers for selecting molecular-targeted agents (MTAs). Skeletal muscle volume is associated with the clinical outcomes in these patients. We investigated the effects of lenvatinib and sorafenib on the skeletal muscles of patients with HCC.
Methods: We evaluated the impact of skeletal muscle changes over a 3-month period for each MTA (n = 117; lenvatinib/sorafenib, 45/72). The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was measured at the third lumbar vertebra. Furthermore, we evaluated the direct effect of each MTA on primary human skeletal muscle cells by estimating muscle protein synthesis using western blot analysis.
Results: The median change in SMI was -0.7% (p = 0.959) and -5.9% (p < 0.001) for the lenvatinib and sorafenib groups, respectively. Sorafenib had a greater effect on skeletal muscle loss than lenvatinib (p < 0.001). Additionally, SMI significantly decreased in the sorafenib group regardless of initial skeletal muscle volume (p < 0.001), whereas no significant differences were observed in the lenvatinib group. Sorafenib therapy (odds ratio [OR], 2.98; p = 0.023) and non-muscle depletion (OR, 3.31; p = 0.009) were associated with a decreased SMI. In vitro analysis showed that sorafenib negatively affected muscle synthesis compared to lenvatinib.
Conclusions: Sorafenib may have a more negative effect on skeletal muscle than lenvatinib.

Introduction/aims: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by pathogenic variants in the DMD gene, making muscle fibers susceptible to contraction-induced membrane damage. Given the potential beneficial action of cannabidiol (CBD), we evaluated the in vitro effect of full-spectrum CBD oil on the viability of dystrophic muscle fibers and the in vivo effect on myopathy of the mdx mouse, a DMD model.
Methods: In vitro, dystrophic cells from the mdx mouse were treated with full-spectrum CBD oil and assessed with cell viability and cytotoxic analyses.

Objectives: This study focuses on mild-to-moderate severity cases to examine the triggers initiating kidney injury.
Materials: Patients aged ≥18 years with suspected heat-related illnesses at the Juntendo University Hospital Emergency and Primary Care Center between July and September 2020 and June and August 2022 were included.
Methods: Blood samples were obtained during their visit, and the patients were categorized into two groups based on their cystatin-based estimated GFR (eGFRcys) values: a kidney injury group (eGFRcys < 60 mL/min/1.

Objective: Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, poses significant challenges in research due to missing data. Incomplete datasets undermine the accuracy and reliability of studies, necessitating effective imputation techniques. This study conducts a comparative analysis of three advanced methods-multiple imputation by chained equations (MICE), support vector regression, and K-nearest neighbors (KNN)-to address data completeness issues in sarcopenia research.

Fecal incontinence is a common condition that can significantly impact patients' quality of life. Obstetric anal sphincter injury and anorectal surgeries are common etiologies. Endoanal ultrasound and anorectal manometry are important diagnostic tools for evaluating patients.
