Epidemic interventions based on surveillance testing programs are a fundamental tool to control the first stages of new epidemics, yet they are costly, invasive and rely on scarce resources, limiting their applicability. To overcome these challenges, we investigate two optimal control problems: (i) how testing needs can be minimized while maintaining the number of infected individuals below a desired threshold, and (ii) how peak infections can be minimized given a typically scarce testing budget. We find that in both cases the optimal testing policy for the well-known Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model is adaptive, with testing rates that depend on the epidemic state, and leads to significant cost savings compared to non-adaptive policies. By using the concept of observability, we then show that a central planner can estimate the required unknown epidemic state by complementing molecular tests, which are highly sensitive but have a short detectability window, with serology tests, which are less sensitive but can detect past infections.

Bluetongue (BT) is a viral vector borne disease primarily affecting ruminants such as sheep, cattle, and goats. On 3 September 2023, the Netherlands reported the first case of bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3/NET2023)), after being BTV free for eleven years. Vaccination with inactivated BT vaccines for serotype 3 has been applied in the Netherlands since May 2024.

We developed a novel DNA aptamer, D8#24S1, which specifically recognizes mertansine (DM1), the cytotoxic payload of the antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1), and applied it for T-DM1 analysis. D8#24S1 was obtained through SELEX and was shown to specifically recognize DM1 with high affinity (dissociation constant, K = 84.2 nM).

Objective: To gain a more holistic understanding of oral health in the past by producing an 'Index of Oro-dental Disease' (IOD), incorporating multiple oro-dental diseases and accounting for differences in antemortem/postmortem alveolar bone and tooth loss.
Materials: UK Adult Dental Health Survey, 2009 anonymised dataset (N = 6206). Archaeological dental data from skeletal individuals from medieval and post-medieval Barton-upon-Humber, North Lincolnshire (N = 214, 1150-1855) and St James's Gardens Burial Ground, London (N = 281, 1789-1853).
Purpose: To theoretically and experimentally study implant lead tip heating caused by radiofrequency (RF) power deposition in different wire configurations that contain loop(s).
Methods: Maximum temperature rise caused by RF heating was measured at 1.5T on 20 insulated, capped wires with various loop and straight segment configurations.
