Objective: People with visual snow syndrome (VSS) experience a range of perceptual phenomena, in addition to visual snow (VS; flickering pinpricks of light throughout the visual field). We investigated the patterns of perceptual phenomena associated with VSS in a large sample of people without prior knowledge of VSS or its associated symptoms. . Two thousand participants completed a screening questionnaire assessing the frequency and severity of perceptual phenomena associated with VSS. We used latent class analysis (LCA), a clustering technique which identifies qualitatively different subgroups within a given population, to investigate whether the presence (or absence) of VS impacted class structure.
Results: Of 1,846 participants included for analysis, 41.92% experienced VS some of the time, including 4.49% who had VSS without prior knowledge. The mean number of perceptual phenomena experienced was 2.03. Optimal four-class LCA solutions did not substantially differ whether VS was included in the model; instead, classes differed in the frequency and total number of symptoms experienced. . Our results suggest that the perceptual phenomena associated with VSS are likely to be common in the general population and do not necessarily indicate an underlying pathology. We also showed that visual snow itself does not explain the presence of other perceptual phenomena.

Visuocortical responses are regulated by gain control mechanisms, giving rise to fundamental neural and perceptual phenomena such as surround suppression. Suppression strength, determined by the composition and relative properties of stimuli, controls the strength of neural responses in early visual cortex, and in turn, the subjective salience of the visual stimulus. Notably, suppression strength is modulated by feature similarity; for instance, responses to a center-surround stimulus in which the components are collinear to each other are weaker than when they are orthogonal.

A neural theory of human lightness computation is described and computer-simulated. The theory proposes that lightness is derived from transient ON and OFF cell responses in the early visual pathways that have different characteristic neural gains and that are generated by fixational eye movements (FEMs) as the eyes transit luminance edges in the image. Background: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a neurological condition characterized by perceptual distortions, most of which are visual in nature (metamorphopsias). Over the past decade there has been a movement in contemporary figurative painting away from strict mimesis toward depicting distortions of the painting's subject, called disrupted realism. In certain cases the similarities between the distortions in those paintings and those characteristic of AIWS are so striking that we suspect that artists may have experienced distorted perceptions themselves and used them for creative inspiration.
