Conscious emotions drive all we do, except for automatic tasks like breathing. Specifically, they enable the operation of incentives-like hunger for eating-that motivate us to perform tasks that are vital to our lives. Indeed, we act because we want to act, and desire is an emotion. Next, we want to act because we expect the action to lead to some positive emotion such as pleasure, enjoyment, satisfaction, comfort, fulfillment, …. Finally, to feel this emotion, we must perceive-consciously experience-the outer world. Conscious emotions also operate indirectly, as when driving an automobile: Though most driving is nonconscious, each particular journey is consciously undertaken for some specific reason; also, emotions operated consciously during the period in which driving was being learned, and for some time afterwards. In short, we suggest that the adaptive function of consciousness is to enable conscious emotions to operate.

While developments within psychoanalytic thought have expanded our understanding of the phenomenon of countertransference and its meaning, clinicians are often left with a sense that negative countertransference is a sign of a therapist's own "unfinished business." Within the context of clinical supervision, the model of putting countertransference reactions through The Therapist Translator is introduced as a means of exploring how to best give voice to and make use of the emotional responses that arise from within the intersubjective analytic field. In this article, the authors introduce a group process dynamic that utilizes the free association of multiple clinicians to assist in "translating" relatively unformulated material into conscious, linguistic information that can be incorporated into the treatment.

This article presents a refinement of theoretical explanations of the main stages of linguistic and cognitive evolution in anthropogenesis. The concepts of language, consciousness, self-consciousness, the self, the unconscious, the subconscious, and the relation between free will and determinism remain at the center of active and complex debates in philosophy and neuroscience. A basic theoretical apparatus comprising the central concepts of "concern" and "providing structure" (an extension of the biological concept of "adaptation") develops the paradigm of the extended evolutionary synthesis.

Emotion recognition via electroencephalogram (EEG) signals holds significant promise across various domains, including the detection of emotions in patients with consciousness disorders, assisting in the diagnosis of depression, and assessing cognitive load. This process is critically important in the development and research of brain-computer interfaces, where precise and efficient recognition of emotions is paramount. In this work, we introduce a novel approach for emotion recognition employing multi-scale EEG features, denominated as the Dynamic Spatial-Spectral-Temporal Network (DSSTNet).
