The Torricelli-Bernoulli sign is a rare radiologic sign seen on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which helps direct the diagnosis of a gastrointestinal tumor. It indicates the presence of non-dependent air trapped within a necrotic ulcer located in a gastrointestinal tumor; sometimes, a vertical stream of bubbles emanating from the opening of the ulcer is present. The term Torricelli-Bernoulli sign first appeared in the literature in 1999, referring to the homonymous physical theorems.

An air-fluid level within a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is unusual and indicates the presence of a fistula within the lumen of the GI tract. Until recently, the optimal management of such patients was not clear-cut. This retrospective study investigated the clinicopathological characteristics, surgical procedures, pre-and post-operative management, and prognosis of patients with GIST containing an air-fluid level.

The Torricelli-Bernoulli sign is a computed tomography (CT) finding that occurs when ulceration/necrosis of a submucosal gastrointestinal tumor releases a stream of air bubbles into the intestinal lumen. A 75-year-old man developed acute abdominal pain at night and presented to a local doctor. Acute abdomen was diagnosed and he was referred to the Emergency Department at Tokai University Oiso Hospital.
