Optical frequency-comb sources, which emit perfectly periodic and coherent waveforms of light, have recently rapidly progressed towards chip-scale integrated solutions. Among them, two classes are particularly significant-semiconductor Fabry-Perót lasers and passive ring Kerr microresonators. Here we merge the two technologies in a ring semiconductor laser and demonstrate a paradigm for the formation of free-running solitons, called Nozaki-Bekki solitons. These dissipative waveforms emerge in a family of travelling localized dark pulses, known within the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We show that Nozaki-Bekki solitons are structurally stable in a ring laser and form spontaneously with tuning of the laser bias, eliminating the need for an external optical pump. By combining conclusive experimental findings and a complementary elaborate theoretical model, we reveal the salient characteristics of these solitons and provide guidelines for their generation. Beyond the fundamental soliton circulating inside the ring laser, we demonstrate multisoliton states as well, verifying their localized nature and offering an insight into formation of soliton crystals. Our results consolidate a monolithic electrically driven platform for direct soliton generation and open the door for a research field at the junction of laser multimode dynamics and Kerr parametric processes.

We investigate the turn-on process in a laser cavity where the round-trip time is several orders of magnitude greater than the active medium timescales. In this long delay limit, we show that the universal evolution of the photon statistics from thermal to Poissonian distribution involves the emergence of power dropouts. While the largest number of these dropouts vanish after a few round-trips, some of them persist and seed coherent structures similar to dark solitons or Nozaki-Bekki holes described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

We consider the existence, stability and dynamics of the nodeless state and fundamental nonlinear excitations, such as vortices, for a quasi-two-dimensional polariton condensate in the presence of pumping and nonlinear damping. We find a series of interesting features that can be directly contrasted to the case of the typically energy-conserving ultracold alkali-atom Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). For sizeable parameter ranges, in line with earlier findings, the nodeless state becomes unstable towards the formation of stable nonlinear single or multi-vortex excitations.

The existence and stability of exact continuous-wave and dark-soliton solutions to a system consisting of the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation linearly coupled with a linear dissipative equation is studied. We demonstrate the existence of vast regions in the system's parameter space associated with stable dark-soliton solutions, having the form of the Nozaki-Bekki envelope holes, in contrast to the case of the conventional CGL equation, where they are unstable. In the case when the dark soliton is unstable, two different types of instability are identified.
