Objective: Electroencephalographic (EEG) microstate abnormalities have been documented in different neurological disorders. We aimed to assess whether EEG microstates are altered also in patients with temporal epilepsy (TLE) and whether they show different activations in patients with unilateral TLE (UTLE) and bilateral TLE (BTLE).

Methods: Nineteen patients with UTLE, 12 with BTLE, and 15 healthy controls were enrolled. Resting state high-density electroencephalography (128 channels) was recorded for 15 min with closed eyes. We obtained a set of stable scalp maps representing the EEG activity, named microstates, from which we acquired the following variables: global explained variance (GEV), mean duration (MD), time coverage (TC), and frequency of occurrence (FO). Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare groups, and Spearman correlation was performed to study the maps in association with the clinical and neuropsychological data.

Results: Patients with BTLE and UTLE showed differences in most of the parameters (GEV, MD, TC, FO) of the four microstate maps (A-D) compared to controls. Patients with BTLE showed a significant increase in all parameters for the microstates in Map-A and a decrease in Map-D compared to UTLE and controls. We observed a correlation between Map-A, disease duration, and spatial short-term memory, whereas microstate Map-D was correlated with the global intelligence score and short-term memory performance.

Significance: A global alteration of the neural dynamics was observed in patients with TLE compared to controls. A different pattern of EEG microstate abnormalities was identified in BTLE compared to UTLE, which might represent a distinctive biomarker.

Background: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is an efficacious intervention for patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDOC). Electroencephalographic (EEG) microstate analysis can provide an assessment of the global state of the brain. Currently, the misdiagnosis rate of consciousness-level assessments in patients with pDOC is high.

Background: Microstate characterization of electroencephalogram (EEG) is a data-driven approach to explore the functional changes and interrelationships of multiple brain networks on a millisecond scale. This study aimed to explore the pathological changes of whole-brain functional networks in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) through microstate analysis and further to explore its potential value as an auxiliary diagnostic index.

Methods: Forty-eight OCD patients (33 with more than moderate anxiety symptoms, 15 with mild anxiety symptoms) and 52 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) can reveal brain activity elicited by external stimuli. Innovative methods to decode ERPs could enhance the accuracy of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and promote the understanding of cognitive processes. This paper proposes a novel Multi-Scale Pyramid Squeeze Attention Similarity Optimization Classification Neural Network (MS-PSA-SOC) for ERP Detection.

Introduction: Multitasking during flights leads to a high mental workload, which is detrimental for maintaining task performance. Electroencephalography (EEG) power spectral analysis based on frequency-band oscillations and microstate analysis based on global brain network activation can be used to evaluate mental workload. This study explored the effects of a high mental workload during simulated flight multitasking on EEG frequency-band power and microstate parameters.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological condition that affects both children and adults. Microstate (MS) analyses, a data-driven approach that identifies stable patterns in EEG signals, offer valuable insights into the neurophysiological characteristics of ADHD. This review summarizes findings from 13 studies that applied MS analyses to resting-state and task-based brain activity in individuals with ADHD.
