Published: December 2024

This systematic review aimed to identify, appraise, and synthesize evidence for the effectiveness of simulation modalities in promoting nursing students' empathy. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis was followed with 20 studies included. The Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) was used to evaluate the quality of the publications. The mean MERSQI score was 10.95 with an SD of 1.62, which was above the average in the literature.Five simulation modalities were identified: standardized patient, simulated suit, manikin, virtual simulation, and virtual reality simulation. Most of the studies (n = 15) reported significant differences in the measured outcomes after their simulation activities, including all 5 simulation modalities, but the most effective modality was the simulation suit. The simulation suit replicates the lived experiences of others, which enhances perspective taking by "turning the student into the patient" through the physical and sensory effects of simulated suits. However, outcome measures were limited to self-report instruments in the studies.

Grounded cognition and the representation of momentum: abstract concepts modulate mislocalization.

Psychol Res

Literature on grounded cognition argues that mental representations of concepts, even abstract concepts, involve modal simulations. These modalities are typically assumed to reside within the body, such as in the sensorimotor system. A recent proposal argues that physical invariants, such as momentum or gravity, can also be substrates in which concepts can be grounded, expanding the assumed limits of grounding beyond the body.

Simulation-based education has been widely implemented in fields such as the aviation industry and the military. Its applications to the field of healthcare education have started to show significant promise globally over the last few decades. Medical education institutions in Pakistan have relied primarily on traditional forms of didactic lectures, apprenticeship models and small-group clinical sessions for clinical skills education in medical schools.

Tracking and Navigation Technologies for Image-Guided Trans-Arterial Interventions.

Tech Vasc Interv Radiol

December 2024

Department of Radiology, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ. Electronic address:

Trans-arterial interventions are an increasingly utilized approach for diagnosing and treating a wide range of pathologies, providing superior patient outcomes compared to traditional open surgical methods. Recent advancements in tracking and navigation technologies have significantly refined these interventions, enhancing procedural precision and success. Advanced imaging modalities, such as fluoroscopy, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), are frequently used strategies offering critical real-time guidance.

Background: While undergraduate education aims to provide student nurses with a level of competence for independent practice, criticisms exist surrounding the ability of these programmes to adequately prepare graduates for the clinical skills required to optimise care. Adopting virtual simulations into nursing curricula may support greater clinical preparedness due to the student-driven nature of this approach. However, learning is also cited as a social experience requiring teacher-student interaction.
