Article Synopsis
  • - The study presents a new processing strategy for synchrotron scanning 3D X-ray diffraction data to analyze complex materials like crystalline rocks, focusing on overcoming challenges of deformation and multiple phases in the samples.
  • - The method utilizes Friedel pairs to accurately pinpoint diffraction events and employs new modules to match data, assign phases to pixels or voxels, and locally fit crystal orientations.
  • - Tests on fractured granite and a metal gasket demonstrate the technique's ability to detail internal structures and textures, revealing valuable information about materials under high plastic deformation.

Background/purpose: Flow diverter porosity directly influences the blood flow reduction at the aneurysm neck level and the anatomical result of the treatment. In this research, we present and compare three methodologies to determine the local porosity of deployed flow diverters.

Method: Three-dimensional rotational angiography was used to obtain computational vessel models of three patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Precipitation nowcasting is vital for effective flood and river management but has historically faced challenges that recent advances in deep generative modeling (DGM) aim to address.
  • Traditional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, like those used by the Tennessee Valley Authority, have been inadequate in accurately predicting precipitation events, leading researchers to explore advanced machine learning methods, specifically physics-embedded approaches.
  • The study highlights that NowcastNet, a advanced DGM method, significantly outperforms the latest NWP model (HRRR) in predicting heavy rainfall, suggesting that integrating these machine learning advancements could enhance flood response systems and water resource management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how local impedance (LI) changes during ablation procedures can predict the effectiveness of creating lesions in heart tissue.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 600 ablation applications, finding that successful applications had a significant and sustained drop in LI, while unsuccessful ones only showed a minor decrease.
  • The results suggest that monitoring LI drop, especially within the first 4 seconds of treatment, can be a useful indicator for the likelihood of effective lesion formation in cardiac ablation.

Portability of IMRT QA between matched linear accelerators.

J Appl Clin Med Phys

October 2024

Department of Human Oncology, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Purpose: To determine if patient-specific IMRT quality assurance can be measured on any matched treatment delivery system (TDS) for patient treatment delivery on another.

Methods: Three VMAT plans of varying complexity were created for each available energy for head and neck, SBRT lung, and right chestwall anatomical sites. Each plan was delivered on three matched Varian TrueBeam TDSs to the same Scandidos Delta Phantom+ diode array with only energy-specific device calibrations.
