AI Article Synopsis

  • Cyber dating abuse (CDA) is a rising concern among college students, characterized by controlling and abusive behaviors toward an ex-partner through technology.
  • A study of 661 college students found that while sexual minority (SM) students showed greater difficulties in emotional regulation and alcohol use, they did not differ from heterosexual students in reported CDA perpetration post-break-up.
  • Break-up characteristics, emotional dysregulation, and alcohol use predicted CDA perpetration for heterosexual students, while only alcohol use was a predictor for SM students, suggesting the need for interventions focusing on alcohol reduction and healthy break-up strategies.

Article Abstract

Cyber dating abuse (CDA) is a growing public health concern among college students. CDA includes monitoring and abusive behaviors perpetrated toward an ex-partner via technology. Little is known about the predictors of CDA, particularly among sexual minority (SM) college students. Some theorized but relatively untested predictors include break-up characteristics, emotional regulation deficits, and alcohol use. The current study investigates what factors are associated with an increased risk for CDA toward an ex-partner (i.e., break-up characteristics, emotional dysregulation, and alcohol use) and the differences in associations with CDA between heterosexual and SM college students. Participants ( = 661) self-reported their CDA perpetration following their worst romantic break-up. They also answered questions about the break-up, their emotional regulation skills, and their current alcohol use. While SM students ( = 191) reported greater emotion regulation difficulties and alcohol use, they did not significantly differ from heterosexual participants ( = 470) in their reported CDA perpetration post-break-up. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to determine the impact of break-up characteristics and individual factors on CDA perpetration. Break-up characteristics, emotional dysregulation, and alcohol use significantly predicted heterosexual participants' CDA perpetration and accounted for 17% of the variance. Conversely, for SM students, only alcohol use was predictive of CDA, accounting for 5% of the variance. Although SM students report similar break-up experiences and levels of CDA as heterosexual students, additional, unmeasured factors may drive perpetration. However, given the generally high rates of alcohol use and CDA, and their robust association, interventions targeting alcohol reduction and healthy relationship dissolution strategies may be beneficial.

Is the time right for preventive cardiology guidelines on sedentary behaviors and sitting time?

Can J Cardiol

December 2024

Institut Universitaire de Cardiologie et de Pneumologie de Québec- Université Laval, Quebec, Canada; Faculty of Medicine, Laval University, Quebec, Canada. Electronic address:

This review looks into sedentary behavior (SB) beyond its simplistic definition of "sitting" while also including sedentary activities. It explores the definition, physiological characteristics, prevalence, and guidelines of SB, contrasting it with physical activity (PA). The discussion encompasses: 1) the association between SB and mortality, with a specific focus on cardiovascular (CV) outcomes; 2) biological mechanisms linking SB to CV health, differentiating between the impacts of acute and chronic sitting additionally, 3) sex and gender differences in SB and, 4) SB as an independent CV risk factor are explored.

Introduction: This work aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of hydroxypropyl guar-hyaluronic acid (HPG-HA) dual-polymer lubricating drops in Indian subjects with dry eye disease (DED).

Methods: This prospective, open-label, single-arm, phase IV study was conducted in India.

Inclusion Criteria: Adults (18-65 years) with an average total ocular surface staining (TOSS) score ≥ 4, best-corrected visual acuity of ≥ 20/40 in each eye, tear break-up time (TBUT) ≤ 10 s, and dry eye questionnaire (DEQ-5) score ≥ 6.

Since flow characteristics are still largely unexplored for high-pressure homogenization, we investigated particle break-up at different Reynolds numbers and transition ranges in two channels (Y- and Z-channel). While the channel geometries are often treated as "black boxes", opening the channels and measuring their geometries allowed a detailed analysis of flow conditions. Transitions from laminar to turbulent flow for pressures of 250-2,000 bar have measurable effects on the sizes of perfluorocarbon (PFC)-nanoemulsion droplets emulsified by phospholipids processed simultaneously in liposomal conformation.

Diagnostic Performance of Visionix VX120+ Platform for Dry Eye Screening.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

Group of Optics and Visual Perception, Department of Optics, Pharmacology and Anatomy, University of Alicante, 03690 Alicante, Spain.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of diagnosing dry eye disease (DED) by using the Visionix VX120+, to establish reference values for tear meniscus height (TMH) and non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT), and to compare the NIBUT measurements with the fluorescein tear break-up time (FBUT), Methods: fifty-eight subjects (34 dry eye and 24 control) were enrolled. The TMH, first NIBUT, and NIBUT50% were evaluated with the Visionix VX120+, and the FBUT was measured with a slit-lamp. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance, and the Bland-Altman method was performed to analyze the agreement.
