The family are utilized as ornamental, medicinal, and food supplements throughout the world. The current study focuses on a comparative analysis of the phenolic compositions and bioactivities (including antioxidant, anticholinergic, and antibacterial activities) of ethanolic extracts derived from the aerial parts of the two species ( L. and Boiss). The presence of phenolic compounds and phytochemicals in the plant extracts was identified using the LC-MS/MS technique. The LC-MS/MS analysis revealed that vanillic acid (125,596.66 µg/L) was the most abundant phytochemical in . Kaempferol (8550.52 µg/L) was the most abundant substance in . The assessment of the antioxidant efficacy of the species extracts was conducted using the DPPH (2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate), ABTS (2.2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), Fe-Fe reducing, and CUPRAC (Cu-Cu reducing) assays. The anticholinergic activity of the samples was determined using the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition assay. The results of antioxidant activity were higher in the than in the ethanol extracts. The extracts of exhibited radical scavenging activity ranging from 15 to 18%, while had activity effects ranging from 34% to 38%. The AChE inhibition potential for and extracts as IC values were 0.221 ± 0.01 mg/mL and 0.067 ± 0.02 mg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial effects of the ethanolic extracts of these species against pathogenic bacteria isolates were determined using the MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) method. These findings indicated that the extracts from and possess the potential to be natural antioxidants in the realm of food preservation. Additionally, their antioxidant, anticholinergic, and antimicrobial properties suggest potential therapeutic utility in the management of certain diseases.

Quercetin, a well-known flavonoid with significant medicinal potential, was derivatized at the C8 position with a tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) moiety, and physicochemical and pharmacological properties, inhibition potential, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity of new compounds were evaluated. Physicochemical and pharmacological properties, including lipophilicity, membrane permeability, and P-glycoprotein substrate affinity, were assessed theoretically using the SwissADME software. The metal-chelating ability of the new compounds was evaluated on metal ions Fe, Zn, and Cu, whose homeostasis disruption is linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Numerous experimental studies suggest the potential for resveratrol (RVT) to be useful in the Alzheimer's disease treatment, but its low bioavailability limits its application. The growing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease calls for a drug that can simultaneously act towards several targets involved in the pathophysiology of the disease. In our study, we evaluated the potential of hydrazone and -acylhydrazone derivatives of vitamin B6 and pyridine-4-carbaldehyde to be used as multi-target directed ligands targeting cholinergic system by inhibiting acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase, lowering the accumulation of β-amyloid plaques by inhibiting both the β-secretase activity and amyloid self-aggregation, and maintaining the biometal balance by chelating certain biometals. Our results showed that all of the tested hydrazones were potent inhibitors of human cholinesterases with inhibition constants (i) in micromolar range able to lower the activity of β-secretase, inhibit amyloid aggregation, chelate biometals and act as antioxidants.
