The Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is a critically endangered aquatic fish. Health monitoring and welfare assessments are critical for the conservation of Chinese sturgeon. In this study, biochemical parameters of serum and skin mucus in Chinese sturgeon were examined to evaluate the potential biomarkers. Serum and mucous samples were obtained from Chinese sturgeon, and the levels of total protein (TP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), lactic acid (LD), acid phosphatase (ACP), lysozyme (LYZ), glucose (GLU), and cortisol were determined. The concentrations of ALT, AST, cortisol, and LYZ were significantly higher in the mucous group than those in the serum group (p < 0.05). In addition, the concentrations of ALP, ACP, LD, LDH, CK, and TP were significantly higher level in the serum group than those in the mucous group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the correlations between serum and mucous biochemical parameters were established. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between serum and skin mucous markers (ACP, cortisol, and LYZ). AST versus ALT in serum and mucus showed a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01). A significant positive correlation was found between cortisol and CK in mucus (p < 0.01). Moreover, LD versus LDH in serum showed a significant but weak positive correlation (p < 0.01). Principal component analysis revealed a complete separation between the serum and mucous groups, with the biomarkers that contributed the most being ALP, TP, ALT, and AST. This study provides baseline data and reference intervals for serum and mucous biochemical parameters in presumably healthy Chinese sturgeons. The current study has important implications for the development of conservation strategies and the conservation status of critically endangered species.

Intermolecular interaction is a key factor in the fortification of surimi gels by plant protein addition. Here, the effects of different intermolecular interactions, such as ionic, covalent and non-covalent interactions, on gel structure, gelation strength and water-holding properties were investigated, using sturgeon surimi fortified by three walnut isolates, including walnut meal (WM), protein isolate (WPI) and peptide (WP), as representatives. Quantitative creep-recovery analysis and soluble protein assay demonstrated that secondary bonds, mainly hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond, possibly played a dominant role in walnut protein-fortified surimi gels.

Interferons (IFNs) play a significant role in the immune regulation of vertebrates, and three types (IFN-I, IFN-II, and IFN-IV) have been identified in bony fish. Importance: Accessing mental health care is challenging for youths, especially those facing intersectional disadvantages, but whether enhancing youth services increases reach and timeliness has rarely been investigated. ACCESS Open Minds (ACCESS-OM) transformed services at urban, rural, and Indigenous sites in Canada using 5 principles (early identification, rapid access, appropriate care, no age-based transitions from 11-25 years, and youth and family engagement).
Objective: To evaluate whether the number of youths referred (hypothesis 1), offered evaluation appointments within 72 hours of referral (hypothesis 2), and receiving services within 30 days of the first appointment (hypothesis 3) increased over the course of ACCESS-OM's implementation.

In 2019, a disease outbreak struck a hybrid sturgeon farm ( ♀ × ♂) in Tiantai, Zhejiang province, leading to the deaths of 8000 sturgeons. The sturgeons exhibited reduced appetite, lethargic and uncoordinated swimming, and physical signs such as reddish petechiae and ulcers on the body and fins. Hemorrhagic spots were observed on the kidneys, spleen, and gonads, alongside reddish intestines with hemorrhagic ascites in the abdominal cavity.
