The formation of highly organized metal-DNA structures has significant implications in bioinorganic chemistry, molecular biology and material science due to their unique properties and potential applications. In this study, we report on the conversion of single-stranded polydeoxycytidine (dC ) into a Pd-DNA supramolecular structure using the [Pd(Aqa)] complex (Aqa=8-amino-4-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid) through a self-assembly process. The resulting Pd-DNA assembly closely resembles a natural double helix, with continuous [Pd(Aqa)(C)] (C=cytosine) units serving as palladium-mediated base pairs, forming interbase hydrogen bonds and intrastrand stacking interactions. Notably, the design of the [Pd(Aqa)] complex favours the interaction with cytosine, distinguishing it from our previously reported [Pd(Cheld)] complex (Cheld=chelidamic acid). This finding opens possibilities for creating heteroleptic Pd-DNA hybrids where different complexes specifically bind to nucleobases. We confirmed the Pd-DNA supramolecular structural assembly and selective binding of the complexes using NMR spectroscopy, circular dichroism, mass spectrometry, isothermal titration calorimetry, and DFT calculations.

A simple, convenient method for the formation of hybrid metal/conductive polymer nanostructures is described. Polyimidazole (PIm) has been templated on λ-DNA via oxidative polymerisation of imidazole using FeCl3 to produce conductive PIm/DNA nanowires. The PIm/DNA nanowires were decorated with Pd (Pd/PIm/DNA) by electroless reduction of PdCl4(-2) with NaBH4 in the presence of PIm/DNA; the choice of imidazole was motivated by the potential Pd(II) binding site at the pyridinic N atom.

Metal/DNA/SWNT hybrid nanostructure-based gas sensor arrays were fabricated by means of ink jet printing of metal ion chelated DNA/SWNTs on microfabricated electrodes, followed by electroless deposition to reduce metal ions to metal. DNA served as a dispersing agent to effectively solubilize pristine SWNTs in water and as metal ion chelating centers for the formation of nanoparticles. Noble metals including palladium, platinum, and gold were used because the high binding affinity toward specific analytes enhances the selectivity and sensitivity.

Novel DNA-MMT hybrid supported metal nanoparticle catalysts, such as Pt/DNA-MMT, Pd/DNA-MMT, Au/DNA-MMT, were prepared for application in highly selective aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes, acids and esters, respectively. Taking advantage of the water-soluble reversibility of these catalysts, all the transformations could be performed smoothly in water and reuse of the catalysts has also been accomplished by a very simple phase separation process.
