Oxarthrius spiculatus sp. nov. from the Brazilian Amazon is described. Major diagnostic features of male and female genitalia are illustrated. Female genitalia is described for the genus for the first time. The specimens of the new species were collected from bauxite mining area in the State of Par, Brazil where they seem to live in leaf litter. The distribution of the genus is covered and a key to the known Brazilian species is given. Additionally, the lectotype is designated for the Brazilian species Oxarthrius anthicoides (L.W.Schaufuss) and Oxarthrius bispinosus (Reitter).

Influence of rock heterogeneity on the correlation between uniaxial compressive strength and Brazilian tensile strength.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Geological Safety of Coastal Urban Underground Space, MNR, Qingdao, 266101, China.

To offer guidance for using Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) to estimate UCS of heterogeneous rocks, this study uses sandstone (fine or coarse grain) and gneiss (0°, 45°, 90° inclined anisotropy) to investigate the influence of grain size or anisotropy on the correlations of UCS-BTS. According to the regression analysis, there is no significant equation of UCS-BTS for rocks with vertical anisotropy. The grain size variation or multidirectional anisotropy can result in a decrease in the determination coefficient value of correlations.

The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microorganisms in the digestive tract, has emerged as a critical factor in human health, influencing metabolic, immune, and neurological functions. This review explores the connection between the gut microbiome and orthopedic health, examining how gut microbes impact bone density, joint integrity, and skeletal health. It highlights mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis to inflammation in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, suggesting microbiome modulation as a potential therapeutic strategy.

Introduction: Food addiction (FA) has been associated with emotional dysregulation, impulsivity and reduced quality of life, but its interrelationships remain underexplored. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to examine these connections using network analysis.

Methods: Data were collected from 1777 university students in Brazil and Canada through an online survey.

Environmental drivers of fish bycatch composition in small-scale shrimp trawling along the southern Brazilian coast.

Environ Monit Assess

December 2024

School of the Sea, Science and Technology, Universidade Do Vale Do Itajaí (Univali, Rua Uruguai, 458, Itajaí, SC, CP 360, Brazil.

Small-scale shrimp trawling is crucial for the economy and culture of coastal communities worldwide, providing several ecosystem services. However, bottom trawling is well-known for its negative impacts on habitat structure and marine communities. Bycatch, or the accidental capture of non-target species during fishing, can offer valuable insights into the composition and variation of fish assemblages.

Research on the influence of loading rate on the dynamic initiation fracture toughness of CMDB propellant.

Sci Rep

December 2024

School of Mechanical Engineering, Key Laboratory of Special Engine Technology, Ministry of Education, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, 210094, People's Republic of China.

In the field of gun launched missile extended range rocket, the propellant grain in the rocket needs to withstand significant launch loads during their firing phase, and also bear the high pressure caused by ignition, and the impact of launch overloads and ignition shocks on the structural integrity of propellants becomes very important. So this work investigated the dynamic initiation fracture toughness of the composite modified double-base (CMDB) propellant by both experiments and numerical simulations. The dynamic mechanical properties test of the cracked straight through flattened Brazilian disc (CSTFBD) specimens were conducted using a modified Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB).
