6,7-Bis-(2-methoxyethoxy)-4(3H)-quinazolinone (BMEQ) was selected from quinazolinones for its strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity (IC = 160 ± 6 μM). It suppressed tyrosinase activity in a competitive way and quenched the fluorescence of the enzyme through a static mechanism. The binding of BMEQ to tyrosinase increased the hydrophobicity of the latter and facilitated non-radiative energy transfer between them. The formation of BMEQ-tyrosinase complex was driven by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, and it loosened the basic framework structure of tyrosinase, affecting the conformation of the enzyme, and leading to a decrease in tyrosinase activity. In addition, the BMEQ postponed the oxidation of phenolics and flavonoids by inhibiting polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD), which resulted in the inhibition of the browning of fresh-cut apples. This study identified a novel tyrosinase inhibitor BMEQ and verified its potential application for improving the preservation of postharvest fruits.

It is still a challenge to use a fast and efficient method for preserving fresh-cut fruits from browning. To address this problem, we developed konjac glucomannan (KGM) incorporated with elderberry anthocyanins (EA) to form film-forming solution (KEA) combined with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution to produce KEA/PVP fiber films by microfluidic blow spinning (MBS). The introduction of PVP and EA improved the spinnability and function properties of KGM-based fiber film, respectively.

Fresh-cut fruit browning severely affects the appearance of fruit. Light treatment can effectively inhibit fresh-cut apple fruit browning, but the regulatory mechanism remains unknown. Here, we discovered that violet LED (Light-Emitting-Diode) light treatment significantly reduced fresh-cut apple fruit browning.

Natural polymer based food packaging has attracted more and more attention, but the lack of active functions of natural polymer hinders its application in the field of active packaging. In this study, chlorogenic acid carbon dots (CGA-CDs) was synthesized mildly using natural plant polyphenol CGA as carbon source, and CGA functionalized layered clays (LDHs@CGA) was introduced as reinforcing agent. Alg active films were fabricated by solution casting method using natural polysaccharide-alginate (Alg), CGA-CDs and LDHs@CGA.

Most photosensitizers have limited responsiveness to visible light, however, visible light is a light source with a wide range of wavelengths and the most common in daily life, and making full use of visible light can help to enhance the photodynamic antimicrobial properties of photosensitizers. To tackle this issue, this study confirmed that alizarin has a good absorption capacity for visible light by UV-DRS analysis. Theoretical calculations showed that alizarin might be excited through the charge transfer (CT) mechanism.

Fresh-cutting fruits is a common practice in markets and households, but their short shelf life is a challenge. Active packaging is a prominent strategy for extending food shelf life. A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines to explore the performance and materials used in biodegradable active packaging for fresh-cut fruits.
