Advancements in neural interface technologies have enabled the direct connection of neurons and electronics, facilitating chemical communication between neural systems and external devices. One promising approach is a synaptogenesis-involving method, which offers an opportunity for synaptic signaling between these systems. Janus synapses, one type of synaptic interface utilizing synaptic cell adhesion molecules for interface construction, possess unique features that enable the determination of location, direction of signal flow, and types of neurotransmitters involved, promoting directional and multifaceted communication. This study presents the first successful establishment of a Janus synapse between dopaminergic (DA) neurons and abiotic substrates by using a neuroligin-2 (NLG2)-mediated synapse-inducing method. NLG2 immobilized on gold-coated microspheres can induce synaptogenesis upon contact with spatially isolated DA axons. The induced DA Janus synapses exhibit stable synaptic activities comparable to that of native synapses over time, suggesting their suitability for application in neural interfaces. By calling for DA presynaptic organizations, the NLG2-immobilized abiotic substrate is a promising tool for the on-site detection of synaptic dopamine release.

Microrobots have emerged as a promising precision therapy approach that has been widely used in minimally invasive treatments, targeted drug delivery, and wound cleansing, and they also offer a potential new method for actively modulating gut microbiota. Here, a double-faced microrobot was designed to carry gut bacteria via covalently immobilizing the antibodies, and a corresponding integrated optical and magnetic dual-driving control system was also developed for precise control of the microrobot. The microrobot utilizes magnetic microsphere as its core, with one side coated in gold, which serves as the optical receptor surface and the interface for bacterial attachment.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare but serious condition that can develop 4-6 weeks after a school age child becomes infected by SARS-CoV-2. To date, in the United States more than 8,862 cases of MIS-C have been identified and 72 deaths have occurred. This syndrome typically affects children between the ages of 5-13; 57% are Hispanic/Latino/Black/non-Hispanic, 61% of patients are males and 100% have either tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 or had direct contact with someone with COVID-19.

The nanohole arrays on the silicon substrate can effectively enhance the light absorption in thin film silicon solar cells. In order to optimize the solar energy absorption, polystyrene microspheres with diameters of 1 μm are used to assist picosecond laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm to fabricate nanohole arrays on silicon substrate. The experimental results show that the morphology and size of the silicon nanoholes strongly depend on the laser fluence.

The Casimir Effect is a physical manifestation of quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum. When two metal plates are placed close together, typically much less than a micron, the long wavelength modes between them are frozen out, giving rise to a net attractive force between the plates, scaling as (or for a spherical-planar geometry) even when they are not electrically charged. In this paper, we observe the Casimir Effect in ambient conditions using a modified capacitive micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensor.
