Purpose: To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT) using an automatic algorithm (A-OCT) vs. manual measurements (M-OCT) with respect to the gold standard ultrasound pachymetry (USP).

Methods: CCT measurements were performed on both eyes of 28 healthy subjects at four times of the day. A-OCT used an automatic software analysis of the corneal image, M-OCT was performed by two operators by setting a digital calliper on the corneal borders, and USP was performed after corneal anesthesia. Measurements were compared using a three-way repeated measures ANOVA. Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate the agreement between OCT measurements and USP.

Results: Both A-OCT and M-OCT significantly underestimated the USP measures, with the mean difference, i.e., the systematic error, being larger for A-OCT (- 19.0 µm) than for M-OCT (- 6.5 µm). Good reproducibility between the two operators was observed. Bland-Altman plots showed that both OCT methods suffered from proportional errors, which were not affected by time and eye.

Conclusions: Measuring CCT with OCT yielded lower values than USP. Therefore, clinicians should be aware that corneal thickness values may be influenced by the measurement method and that the various devices should not be used interchangeably in following up a given patient. Intriguingly, M-OCT had less systematic error than A-OCT, an important outcome that clinicians should consider when deciding to use an OCT device.

Prcis: In 801 participants, corneal hysteresis (CH) was positively associated with female gender and central corneal thickness, and negatively with age and axial length. Diabetes showed no significant association with CH in the adjusted models.

Purpose: To provide values of corneal hysteresis (CH) in an elderly, healthy Greek population and to investigate its association with demographic, ocular, and systemic factors.

Femtosecond laser-assisted large-diameter lamellar corneal-limbal keratoplasty in ocular chemical burns.

Am J Ophthalmol Case Rep

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Guangzhou, China.

Purpose: This study highlights the feasibility of femtosecond laser-assisted large-diameter lamellar corneal-limbal keratoplasty and its efficacy in the treatment of ocular surface failure caused by bilateral ocular chemical injury.

Observations: The series included 3 patients with ocular surface failure caused by bilateral ocular chemical burns. After dissection of the host cornea, a femtosecond laser-assisted large-diameter lamellar corneoscleral button, with varying thickness of 250-400 μm, was sutured to the recipient bed.

A study on the variability and correlation of ocular biological measurement parameters in adult myopic patients.

Front Med (Lausanne)

January 2025

Shenzhen Eye Institute, Shenzhen Eye Hospital, Jinan University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Objective: This study aims to explore the differences in ocular parameters among adult myopic patients with different degrees of myopia and axial lengths, and to investigate the correlations between these ocular parameters.

Methods: This single-center observational study collected clinical data from myopic patients aged 18-45 years who visited the Eye Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January and June 2023. The data included laterality, diopter of spherical power (DS), diopter of cylindrical power (DC), spherical equivalent (SE), axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), flat meridian keratometry (K1), steep meridian keratometry (K2), mean keratometry (Km), anterior chamber depth (ACD), corneal radius of curvature (CRC), and axial length/corneal radius of curvature ratio (AL/CRC).

Objectives: To evaluate scleral thickness of patients with keratoconus by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Materials And Methods: Fifty-two eyes of 42 patients with keratoconus (group 1) and 42 right eyes of 42 healthy individuals (group 2) were included. Scleral thickness measurements were taken with AS-OCT 6, 4, and 2 mm behind the scleral spur in four gaze positions: superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal.

Purpose: To analyze the clinical outcome of organ-cultured endothelium-outward preloaded DMEK (pDMEK) using the RAPID cartridge.

Methods: This prospective study included 80 eyes of 80 patients who received a pDMEK. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell count (ECC), and central corneal thickness were measured preoperatively and 4 to 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively.
