High-level production of free fatty acids from lignocellulose hydrolysate by co-utilizing glucose and xylose in yeast.

Synth Syst Biotechnol

June 2025

Division of Biotechnology, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 457 Zhongshan Road, Dalian, 116023, PR China.

Lignocellulose bio-refinery via microbial cell factories for chemical production represents a renewable and sustainable route in response to resource starvation and environmental concerns. However, the challenges associated with the co-utilization of xylose and glucose often hinders the efficiency of lignocellulose bioconversion. Here, we engineered yeast to effectively produce free fatty acids from lignocellulose.

Transketolase promotes osteosarcoma progression through the YY1-PAK4 axis.

FEBS J

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics, Wuhan Hospital of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor that occurs in adolescents, proliferates and is prone to pulmonary metastasis. Osteosarcoma is characterized by high genotypic heterogeneity, making it difficult to identify reliable anti-osteosarcoma targets. The genotype of osteosarcoma may be highly dynamic, but its high dependence on energy remains constant.

Buffered Hydroxyl Radical for Photocatalytic Non-Oxidative Methane Coupling.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Hydroxy radical (⋅OH) is a prestigious oxidant that allows the cleavage of strong chemical bonds of methane but is untamed, leading to over-oxidation of methane and waste of oxidants, especially at high methane conversion. Here, we managed to buffer ⋅OH in an aqueous solution of photo-irradiated Fe, where ⋅OH almost participates in methane oxidation. Due to the interaction between Fe and SO , the electron transfer from OH to excited-state Fe for ⋅OH generation is retarded, while excessive ⋅OH is consumed by generated Fe to restore Fe.

Bone lengthening and fracture repair depend on the anabolic properties of chondrocytes that function in an avascular milieu. The limited supply of oxygen and nutrients calls into question how biosynthesis and redox homeostasis are guaranteed. Here we show that glucose metabolism by the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is essential for endochondral ossification.

Advance glycation end products (AGEs) are the main reason for diabetic complications. Persistent hyperglycemia and non-enzymatic glycation increase the rate of AGEs formation. Natural functional food-based approaches are mainly under investigation these days to discover new treatment options.
