In this study, the usability of construction and demolition waste (CDW) aggregates as filling when stabilized with alkaline activator solution (AAS) and blast furnace slag (BFS) was investigated. The initial stage of this study involved determining the engineering properties of CDW by laboratory experiments. In the next stage, modified Proctor tests were performed to investigate the compaction behavior of CDW, to which 5% to 30% BFS was added with water or AAS.

Kaolinite is a single 2D layer of kaolin or metakaolin (MK), common clays that can be characterized as layered 3D materials. We show that because of its chemical composition, kaolinite can be converted into an amorphous 3D material by chemical means. This dimensional transformation is possible due to the large surface to volume ratio and chemical reactivity of kaolinite.

Enhanced mechanical properties of alkali-activated dolomite dust emulsified asphalt composites.

Sci Rep

December 2024

School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan, China.

The dolomite dust-emulsified asphalt composite (DAC) with excellent mechanical properties was successfully prepared using alkali activation. The effects of different alkali concentrations and emulsified asphalt contents on the mechanical properties of the materials were studied. And the micro-mechanisms of its mechanical performance changes were analyzed through SEM and XRD characterization.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on creating a filling material from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash and slag, aimed at improving stability in mine goafs.
  • The research tests the long-term mechanical properties of this material under various stress levels using uniaxial and triaxial creep tests.
  • Findings reveal three distinct creep behavior patterns, with the total creep deformation comparable to soft rock and suggest that the polymerization products in the filling material enhance stability by delaying accelerated creep.
