Unlabelled: Metaplastic breast cancer (BC-Mp) presents diagnostic and therapeutic complexities, with scant literature available. Correct assessment of tumor size by ultrasound (US) and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) is crucial for treatment planning.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on databases encompassing records of BC patients (2012-2022) at the National Research Institutes of Oncology (Warsaw, Gliwice and Krakow Branches). Inclusion criteria comprised confirmed diagnosis in postsurgical pathology reports with tumor size details (pT) and availability of tumor size from preoperative US and/or FFDM. Patients subjected to neoadjuvant systemic treatment were excluded. Demographics and clinicopathological data were gathered.

Results: Forty-five females were included. A total of 86.7% were triple-negative. The median age was 66 years (range: 33-89). The median pT was 41.63 mm (6-130), and eight patients were N-positive. Median tumor size assessed by US and FFDM was 31.81 mm (9-100) and 34.14 mm (0-120), respectively. Neither technique demonstrated superiority ( > 0.05), but they both underestimated the tumor size ( = 0.002 for US and = 0.018 for FFDM). Smaller tumors (pT1-2) were statistically more accurately assessed by any technique ( < 0.001). Only pT correlated with overall survival.

Conclusion: The risk of underestimation in tumor size assessment with US and FFDM has to be taken into consideration while planning surgical procedures for BC-Mp.

Acceptability of the Fit2ThriveMB mHealth physical activity promotion intervention in women with metastatic breast cancer.

Support Care Cancer

January 2025

Department of Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, 680 N Lake Shore Drive, Suite 1400, Chicago, IL, 60611, USA.

Purpose: Increasing physical activity (PA) is safe and associated with improved health outcomes in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Mobile health (mHealth) PA interventions that allow for remote monitoring and tailoring to abilities may be particularly useful for MBC patients. However, limited data exist on the acceptability of these interventions for MBC patients.

In this work, we synthesize a quinoline-based heptamethine cyanine, QuCy7, with sulfonate groups to enhance water solubility. This dye demonstrates exceptional near-infrared absorption beyond 750 nm, accompanied by photothermal properties but low photostability. Encapsulating QyCy7 with polyethylene glycol to form nanopolymer, QuCy7@mPEG NPs, addresses the issue of its photoinstability.

An analysis of extraskeletal osteosarcoma based on the literature.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics, Jinling Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, 305 East Zhongshan Road, Nanjing, 210002, Jiangsu, China.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a very rare malignant tumor. This study aimed to provide more evidence about the natural history and clinical features of ESOS, and clarify the impact of chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (RT) on patient survival and postoperative recurrence for the sake of gaining a better understanding about the disease. Patient/tumor characteristics, recurrence, treatment, and follow-up durations were collected by searching studies in PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, Elsevier, SpringerLink, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WAN FANG Data before June 30, 2023.

Steroid hormone-induced wingless ligands tune female intestinal size in Drosophila.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Biology, Institute of Genetics, The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Female reproduction comes at great expense to energy metabolism compensated by extensive organ adaptations including intestinal size. Upon mating, endocrine signals orchestrate a 30% net increase of absorptive epithelium. Mating increases production of the steroid hormone Ecdysone released by the Drosophila ovaries that stimulates intestinal stem cell (ISC) divisions.

To understand the clinicopathological and molecular genetic characteristics of aggressive renal mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC). The clinical features, histology, immunophenotype, molecular characteristics and prognosis of 4 cases of metastatic/recurrent renal MTSCC that were submitted to the Peking University Third Hospital (2 cases), Institute of Urology, Peking University (one case) and Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (one case) from 2015 to 2020 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Among the four patients, two were male and two were female.
