Purpose: The optimal method for monitoring intensive care unit (ICU) performance is unknown. We sought to compare process control charts using standardized mortality ratio (SMR), p-charts, and cumulative sum (CUSUM) charts for detecting increases in risk-adjusted mortality within ICUs.

Methods: Using data from 17 medical-surgical ICUs that included 29,592 patients in Ontario, Canada, we created risk-adjusted p-charts and SMRs on monthly intervals and CUSUM charts.

Learning curve in robotic liver surgery: easily achievable, evolving from laparoscopic background and team-based.

HPB (Oxford)

January 2025

Hepatobiliary Surgery Division, IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Via Olgettina 60, 20132, Milan, Italy; University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Faculty of Medicine, 20132, Milan, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on evaluating the learning curves of two surgeons with different laparoscopic experiences performing robotic liver resections at San Raffaele Hospital, using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis on surgeries performed since February 2021.
  • - Results indicated that both surgeons improved their operative times after performing a set number of cases, with the Pioneer Surgeon and New Generation Surgeon needing 15 and 10 low- to intermediate-complexity cases respectively, and 10 and 18 high-complexity cases.
  • - The findings highlight that team collaboration significantly impacts the learning process, revealing that after 12 cases, a "team learning curve" was evident, showing the effectiveness of working together in surgical settings.

Prostate cancer (PC) is common among men and has become a significant societal issue. Localized PC has a good prognosis with appropriate treatment. Prostatectomy, particularly robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), has become a common treatment since the da Vinci prostatectomy was approved by the FDA in 2001.

Deep Learning-Adjusted Monitoring of In-Hospital Mortality after Liver Transplantation.

J Clin Med

October 2024

Department of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery, LMU, 81377 Munich, Germany.

: Surgeries represent a mainstay of medical care globally. Patterns of complications are frequently recognized late and place a considerable burden on health care systems. The aim was to develop and test the first deep learning-adjusted CUSUM program (DL-CUSUM) to predict and monitor in-hospital mortality in real time after liver transplantation.

Learning Curve Analysis for Robotic-assisted Harvest of Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

October 2024

From the Department of Surgery, Allegheny Health Network, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is the preferred method for autologous breast reconstruction after mastectomy, but risks the development of hernia, bulge, and decreased core strength. Robotic harvest of DIEP vessels may limit abdominal wall morbidity through smaller fascial incisions and preservation of motor nerves. This study shows the expected learning curve (LC) for robotic harvest and compares the LC between a general surgeon (GS) and a plastic surgeon (PS).
