Antarctica, protected by its strong polar vortex and sheer distance from anthropogenic activity, was always thought of as pristine. However, as more data on the occurrence of persistent organic pollutants on Antarctica emerge, the question arises of how fast the long-range atmospheric transport takes place. Therefore, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated (oxy-)PAHs were sampled from the atmosphere and measured during 4 austral summers from 2017 to 2021 at the Princess Elisabeth station in East Antarctica. The location is suited for this research as it is isolated from other stations and activities, and the local pollution of the station itself is limited. A high-volume sampler was used to collect the gas and particle phase (PM) separately. Fifteen PAHs and 12 oxy-PAHs were quantified, and concentrations ranging between 6.34 and 131 pg m (ΣPAHs-excluding naphthalene) and between 18.8 and 114 pg m (Σoxy-PAHs) were found. Phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene were the most abundant PAHs. The gas-particle partitioning coefficient log() was determined for 6 compounds and was found to lie between 0.5 and -2.5. Positive matrix factorization modeling was applied to the data set to determine the contribution of different sources to the observed concentrations. A 6-factor model proved a good fit to the data set and showed strong variations in the contribution of different air masses. During the sampling campaign, a number of volcanic eruptions occurred in the southern hemisphere from which the emission plume was detected. The FLEXPART dispersion model was used to confirm that the recorded signal is indeed influenced by volcanic eruptions. The data was used to derive a transport time of between 11 and 33 days from release to arrival at the measurement site on Antarctica.

Chalcogen-containing carbonyls, specifically thioxanthone (TX), hold great potential in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). While the development of narrowband OLEDs with chalcogen-containing carbonyls remains challenging due to difficulties in achieving both high device efficiency and narrow emission spectra. Herein, via a strategic incorporation of the TX moiety, two orange-red narrowband emitters, 2TXBN and BNTXBN, are designed and synthesized for the first time.

This study integrated data-driven interpretable machine learning (ML) with statistical methods, complemented by knowledge-driven discrimination diagrams, to identify the primary driving factors of heavy metal (HM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in agricultural soils influenced by complex sources in a rapidly industrializing region of a megacity in southern China. First, the statistical characteristics of the concentrations of HMs and PAHs, and their correlations with the environmental covariates were explored. Three ML models and a statistical model comprising multiple environmental variable predictors were developed and assessed to predict the concentration of HMs in the agricultural soil.

Plastic products contain complex mixtures of chemical compounds that are incorporated into polymers to improve material properties. Besides the intentional chemical additives, other compounds including residual monomers and non-intentionnaly added substances (NIAS) as well as sorbed pollutants are usually also present in aged plastic. Since most of these substances are only loosely bound to the polymer via non-covalently interactions, i.

In this study, a novel imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL) coating was developed for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) using a sol-gel method. The effects of different counterions, conditioning temperatures and polymer compositions were investigated. The stir bar with bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl) amide 1-butyl-3-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium showed good mechanical and thermal stability with high resistance to water solubilization.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted significant interest in material chemistry, particularly if they own extremely low band gaps and magnetic properties. However, challenges remain regarding the synthetic accessibility and energy saturation issues. In this study, we introduce NR-11, which consists of eleven aromatic rings in its main conjugation and is separately doped with two electron-rich nitrogen atoms.
