Background: Edema in some subjects worsens over time and wraps help to reduce the leg volume.

Material And Methods: An adjustable compression wrap was tried on volunteers for 5 h and volumes measured in each limb before and after wrapping using a 3D surface scanner (HandySCAN 3D®) to estimate the volume of the leg. The contralateral leg was used as control.

Results: We observed a significant decrease in volume in the wrap legs and an increase in the control legs ( < .001), both in the lower part of leg ( = .001) and in the upper part ( = .001).

Conclusions: Using the Readywrap® for 5 hours significantly reduces the leg volume. This study enables Readywrap to be studied in a population that is easy to observe in the context of a research program. The Handyscan3D® was shown accurate and reproducible to assess leg volume in future studies.

pH-responsive antibacterial emulsion gel based on cinnamaldehyde and carboxymethyl chitosan for fruits preservation applications.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yantai University, Shandong Province, 264005, China. Electronic address:

Although the natural antibacterial agent, cinnamaldehyde, has been extensively studied in the field of food packaging, its water solubility and instability limit its further applications. The controllable responsive release can be achieved through encapsulation in responsive emulsion systems based on carboxymethyl chitosan. Herein, a pH-responsive antibacterial emulsion gel was constructed from cinnamaldehyde-loaded oil-in-water emulsion templates.

: Patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) or neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) experience vertigo, confusion, and syncope. Compression garments help reduce venous pooling in these patients, thereby increasing cardiac output. We aimed to determine end-user opinions of compression products intended to alleviate symptoms for POTS and nOH.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study surveyed 35 experienced hip surgeons, revealing that 91.4% use chemoprophylaxis, primarily aspirin, with varying durations suggested, mostly between 2 to 4 weeks post-surgery.
  • * While most experts agree on the importance of VTE prophylaxis, there is no consensus on the best duration for treatment or recommendations regarding stopping oral contraceptives and smoking before the surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on creating iron ore tailings-blast furnace slag (IOT-BFS)-based geopolymers with adjustable setting times and high compressive strength for civil engineering applications.
  • Key factors influencing the setting time include the content of iron ore tailings, alkali content, liquid-solid ratio, and the modulus of alkaline activators, which were thoroughly analyzed.
  • Results show that adjusting the modulus of the alkaline activator significantly affects the setting time, allowing control from around 3 minutes to 108 minutes, enabling tailored geopolymers for diverse construction needs.

From design to 3D printing: A proof-of-concept study for multiple unit particle systems (MUPS) printed by dual extrusion fused filament fabrication.

Int J Pharm X

MUPS (multiple unit particle systems) are oral dosage forms consisting of small particles which are filled into capsules or compressed into tablets. Compared to monolithic sustained-release tablets, MUPS tablets rapidly disintegrate inside the stomach releasing the contained small particles, which can be emptied from the stomach independent of housekeeping waves. Control of release can be achieved by adapting the particle composition.
