Electrocarboxylation of the C(sp)-O bond in 1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones with CO to achieve β-amino acids is developed. The C-O bond in substrates can be selectively cleaved via the single electron transfer on the surface of a cathode or through a CO  intermediate under additive-free conditions. A great diversity of β-amino acids can be obtained in a moderate to excellent yield and readily converted to various biologically active compounds.

Detection of Protein-Nucleic Acid Interaction by Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay.

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA) is a powerful technique for studying nucleic acid and protein interactions. This technique is based on the principle that nucleic acid-protein complex and nucleic acid migrate at different rates due to differences in size and charge. Nucleic acid and protein interactions are fundamental to various biological processes, such as gene regulation, replication, transcription, and recombination.

is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen and is a common cause of nosocomial infections. The increasing development of antibiotic resistance in this organism is a global health concern. The clinical isolate AB307-0294 produces a type VI secretion system (T6SS) that delivers three antibacterial effector proteins that give this strain a competitive advantage against other bacteria in polymicrobial environments.

Halide-free ion pair organocatalyst from biobased α-hydroxy acid for cycloaddition of CO to epoxide.

The cycloaddition of CO to epoxide (CCE) reactions produce valuable cyclic carbonates useful in the electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries, as organic solvents, and in polymeric materials. However, halide-containing catalysts are predominantly used in these reactions, despite halides being notoriously corrosive to steel processing equipment and residual halides also having harmful effects. To eliminate the reliance on halides as cocatalyst in most CCE reactions, halide-free catalysts are highly desirable.

Type III protein secretion systems (T3SSs) function as multiprotein devices that span the envelope of Gram-negative bacteria using the peptidoglycan (PG) layer as scaffold. This spatial arrangement explains why modifications in PG structure can alter T3SS activity. In incorporation of non-canonical D-amino acids in the PG was shown to decrease the activity of the T3SS encoded by the pathogenicity island-1 (SPI-1) without affecting other T3SS, like the flagellum apparatus.

Environmental impact of an acid-forming alum shale waste rock legacy site in Norway.

Environmental Chemistry Section, Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Aas, Norway.

Alum shale formations in Scandinavia are generally enriched in uranium (U) and, when exposed to air and water, may produce acidic rock drainage (ARD), releasing potentially harmful elements into the environment. Taraldrud is a legacy site in southeast Norway where approx. 51 000 m of alum shale was deposited in the 1980s-1990s.
