Motion-less depth-selective optogenetic probe using tapered fiber and an electrically tuneable liquid crystal steering element.

Biomed Opt Express

Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers, Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Optics, Université Laval, 2375 Rue de la Terrasse, Québec, Québec G1V 0A6, Canada.

A miniature electrically tuneable liquid crystal component is used to steer light from -1° to +1° and then to inject into a simple tapered fiber. This allows the generation of various propagation modes, their leakage, and selective illumination of the surrounding medium at different depth levels without using mechanical movements nor deformation. The performance of the device is characterized in a reference fluorescence medium (Rhodamine 6G) as well as in a mouse brain (medullary reticular formation and mesencephalic locomotor regions) during in-vivo experiments as a proof of concept.

Resistive random access memory (ReRAM) holds promise for building computing-in-memory (CIM) architectures to execute machine learning (ML) applications. However, existing ReRAM technology faces challenges such as cell and cycle variability, read-disturb and limited endurance, necessitating improvements in devices, algorithms and applications. Understanding the behaviour of ReRAM technologies is crucial for advancement.

All-inorganic perovskite materials have been widely used in various devices, including lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar cells, due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Devices utilizing high-quality single crystals are anticipated to achieve significantly enhanced performance. In this work, we present a high-performance vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) based on a single-crystal CsPbBr microplatelet, fabricated through a simple solution process and sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBRs).

Precise and accurate length measurements of optical fibers are increasingly needed across various applications. However, many commercially available devices are either too inaccurate or, conversely, too advanced and costly for basic fiber length determinations. In this Letter, we present a simple and relatively inexpensive method to measure the length of optical fibers with a precision of 1.
