Patients admitted for major vascular reconstruction operations received an i.v. dose of 65Zn. From the increased whole-body retention of 65Zn and the findings on other parameters it was concluded that the was concluded that the post-operative zinc metabolism of these patients differed from that of the control subjects. Unexpectedly, this difference persisted for several months. These patients can probably serve as controls in studies of patients who have undergone surgery of the intestinal tract. Increase of whole-body retention of 65Zn may be a sensitive indicator for subclinical zinc deficiency, but application in practice is hampered by the long duration of the period required for the measurement. From the present results it seems likely that measurement of the retention of 65Zn in the forearm as a function of time yields the same information but in a considerably shorter time.

Effects of Ingested Nanomaterials on Tissue Distribution of Co-ingested Zinc and Iron in Normal and Zinc-Deficient Mice.

NanoImpact

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) reduced serum triglyceride levels in rats when co-administered with heavy cream by gavage. Do CNF and other nanomaterials (NMs) alter the tissue distribution and retention of co-administered metal ions? We evaluated whether 5 different NMs affected tissue distribution of co-ingested Zn and Fe in zinc-replete versus zinc-deficient mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either zinc-replete or zinc-deficient diets for 3 weeks, followed by gavage with NM suspensions in water containing both ZnCl and FeCl.

Delineation of metals and radionuclides bioconcentration in eggs of seabream Sparus aurata and effect of environmental pCO.

J Environ Radioact

December 2018

International Atomic Energy Agency - Environment Laboratories, 4 Quai Antoine Ier, Monaco; CNRS, Laboratoire Adaptation et Diversité en Milieu Marin, Station Biologique de Roscoff, Place Georges Teissier, 29682, Roscoff Cedex, France.

Considered as the most vulnerable ontogenic stages to environmental stressors, the early-life stages of fish paid a peculiar attention with respect to their vulnerability to metal and radionuclides contamination. Concomitantly, the increasing anthropogenic CO release in the atmosphere will cause major change of the seawater chemistry that could affect the trace elements and radionuclides bioconcentration efficiencies by marine organisms. The aim of this work was to 1) delineate the uptake behaviours of Ag, Am, Cd, Co and Zn in seabream eggs during 65 h of development and retention by newly hatched and 7 h-old larvae maintained in clean seawater, respectively, and 2) investigate the effects of elevated pCO on the bioconcentration efficiencies of these elements in eggs.

High contribution of the particulate uptake pathway to metal bioaccumulation in the tropical marine clam Gafrarium pectinatum.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2018

International Atomic Energy Agency-Environment Laboratories (IAEA-EL), 4a Quai Antoine Ier, MC-98000, Monaco, Principality of Monaco.

The clam Gafrarium pectinatum was investigated to assess its usefulness as a bioindicator species of metal mining contamination in the New Caledonia lagoon. The uptake and depuration kinetics of Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, and Zn were determined following exposures via seawater, sediment, and food using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Ag, Cd, Cr, Co, and Zn). When the clams were exposed to dissolved metals, Co, Zn, and Ag were readily incorporated in their tissues (concentration factors (CF) ranging from 181 to 4982 after 28 days of exposure) and all metals were strongly retained (biological half-lives always >2 months).

The ZntA-like NpunR4017 plays a key role in maintaining homeostatic levels of zinc in Nostoc punctiforme.

December 2015

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Deakin University, 221 Burwood Hwy, Burwood, Victoria, 3125, Australia.

Analysis of cellular response to zinc exposure provides insights into how organisms maintain homeostatic levels of zinc that are essential, while avoiding potentially toxic cytosolic levels. Using the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme as a model, qRT-PCR analyses established a profile of the changes in relative mRNA levels of the ZntA-like zinc efflux transporter NpunR4017 in response to extracellular zinc. In cells treated with 18 μM of zinc for 1 h, NpunR4017 mRNA levels increased by up to 1300 % above basal levels.
