Carboxylic acids and thiols are basic chemical compounds with diverse utility and widespread reactivity. However, the direct conversion of unprotected acids to thiols is hampered due to a fundamental problem - free thiols are incompatible with the alkyl radicals formed on decarboxylation of carboxylic acids. Herein, we describe a concept for the direct photocatalytic thiolation of unprotected acids allowing unprotected thiols and their derivatives to be obtained. The method is based on the application of a thionocarbonate reagent featuring the N-O bond. The reagent serves both for the rapid trapping of alkyl radicals and for the facile regeneration of the acridine-type photocatalyst.

Melatonin (MT), an indole compound, can boost plant growth under abiotic stress conditions. This experiment aims to elucidate the synergistic effect of MT and ascorbic acid (AsA) in mitigating salinity stress by assessing the photosynthetic and antioxidant capacity of the maize inbred lines H123 and W961. The results indicated that exogenous MT and AsA significantly improved photosynthetic efficiency and biomass of maize under salinity stress.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), which is induced by excessive alcohol consumption, is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. ALD patients exhibit a spectrum of liver injuries, including hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, similar to symptoms of nonalcohol-associated liver diseases such as primary biliary cholangitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Elafibranor has been approved for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis and has been shown to improve symptoms in both animal models and cell models of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Background: Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH)-like lesions are hyperplastic formations in patients with micronodular cirrhosis and a history of alcohol abuse. Although pathologically similar to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions, they are benign. As such, it is important to develop methods to distinguish between FNH-like lesions and HCC.

We present a photocatalytic protocol for the -arylation of carboxylic acids using nickel complexes bearing C8-pyridyl xanthines. Our studies suggest that the underlying mechanism operates independently of external photosensitizers. Stoichiometric experiments and crystallographic studies characterize the catalytically relevant Ni complexes.

Cassava is a starchy staple typically consumed in tropical countries; however, its high moisture content renders it susceptible to post-harvest deterioration. Fermentation has been used to improve shelf-life, functional properties, nutrient bioavailability, minimize toxic compounds, and alter aroma. In this study, the effect of added salt (5-25 %) on the pH, titratable acidity (TTA), and volatile compounds (VOCs) in cassava fermented was investigated.
