Understanding the genetic regulatory mechanisms of gene expression is an ongoing challenge. Genetic variants that are associated with expression levels are readily identified when they are proximal to the gene (i.e.

Drought stress substantially decreases crop yields by causing flowers and fruits to detach prematurely. However, the molecular mechanisms modulating organ abscission under drought stress remain unclear. Here, we show that expression of CALMODULIN2 (CaM2) is specifically and sharply increased in the pedicel abscission zone (AZ) in response to drought and plays a positive role in drought-induced flower drop in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).

ERK activity oscillates between sustained activation during oocyte formation and transient inactivation during oocyte maturation, fertilization, and early embryogenesis. Consequences of ectopic ERK activity upon oocyte maturation and in early embryogenesis are unknown. We show, in Caenorhabditis elegans, that ectopic ERK activity upon oocyte maturation (metaphase I oocytes) results in embryos with abnormalities in nuclear divisions leading to embryonic death.

The MADS-box protein SHATTERPROOF 2 regulates TAA1 expression in the gynoecium valve margins.

SHATTERPROOF 2 regulates TAA1 expression for the establishment of the gynoecium valve margins. Gynoecium development and patterning play a crucial role in determining the ultimate structure of the fruit and, thus, seed production. The MADS-box transcription factor SHATTERPROOF 2 (SHP2) contributes to valve margin differentiation and plays a major role in fruit dehiscence and seed dispersal.

Zebularine-treated wheat uncovered a phenotype with characteristics of an epigenetically regulated trait, but major chromosomal aberrations, not DNA methylation changes, are the cause, making zebularine unsuitable for epigenetic breeding. Breeding to identify disease-resistant and climate-tolerant high-yielding wheats has led to yield increases over many years, but new hardy, higher yielding varieties are still needed to improve food security in the face of climate change. Traditional breeding to develop new cultivars of wheat is a lengthy process taking more than seven years from the initial cross to cultivar release.
