In 3-, 9-, 24-, and 30-month-old male rats (Fischer 344), the nuclear perimeter and the density and diameter of nuclear pore complexes in the granule cells of the dentate fascia were studied. Whereas the nuclear perimeter and the diameter of nuclear pore complexes did not change as a function of age, there was a significant loss of them at 24 months (20%), compared with the third month. This change suggests that the nucleocytoplasmic communication may be impaired with age which would adversely affect protein synthesis, and could explain the loss of the postsynaptic sites of the dentate fascia of aged rats.

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is the proteinous nanopore that solely regulates molecular transport between the nucleus and cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell. Hypothetically, the NPC utilizes the hydrophobic barriers based on the repeats of phenylalanine-glycine (FG) units to selectively and efficiently transport macromolecules. Herein, we quantitatively assess the hydrophobicity of transport barriers confined in the nanopore by applying scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM).

In order to determine the influence of different factors on the CO huff-and-puff displacement effect, a CO huff-and-puff experiment was carried out with Chang 6 tight sandstone samples in Ordos Basin as the research object. Combined with nuclear magnetic resonance technology, the influences of injection pressure, cycle numbers and soaking time on the CO huff-and-puff effect were evaluated, and the optimal CO huff-and-puff parameters were optimized. The microscopic degree of crude oil production in different scale pores was quantitatively characterized.

Radioactive iodine, a key waste product of nuclear energy, has been a significant concern among nuclear materials because of its high volatility and its ability to easily enter the human metabolism. Porous materials containing a large number of N-heterocyclic units such as carbazole in the skeletons use as effective adsorbents showing high iodine capture capacities. Herein, a new carbazole-bismaleimide-based hyper-cross-linked porous organic polymer (CzBMI-POP) was successfully prepared from a new tetra-armed carbazole-maleimide monomer (Bis-Cz(BMI)), which contains biscarbazole units and maleimide side groups.

Human exposure to arsenicals is associated with devastating diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. At the same time, arsenic-based drugs are used as therapeutic agents. The ability of arsenic to directly bind to proteins is correlated with its toxic and therapeutic effects highlighting the importance of elucidating arsenic-protein interactions.

mRNAs are packaged with proteins into messenger ribonucleoprotein complexes (mRNPs) in the nucleus. mRNP assembly and export are of fundamental importance for all eukaryotic gene expression. Before export to the cytoplasm, mRNPs undergo dynamic remodeling governed by the DEAD-box helicase DDX39B (yeast Sub2).
